The only fake name I remember the Mats playing under is Apache Plaza. It was a once-flashy mall that had fallen on hard times by the time they borrowed the name for an advertised show (I think at the 400 Bar, a MPLS bar which was half its current size and would have been overrun had they played under their real name). Anyway, now the real Apache Plaza is rubble: www.startribune.com/stories/389/4770551.htmlBut it had a charm that the Mats obviously had great appreciation for, and now a fan site: www.apacheplaza.com

After the OarFolkJokeOpus burned there was a two night benefit at First Ave., I believe this was in December 1985. The first night there was a huge blizzard but the show went on and my buddies and I slid our way over to First Ave to see Soul Asylum put on a kickass show.
When we bought the tickets, the headliners were listed on the ticket as Apache Plaza. We were told this was really the 'Mats, but they might not be playing because they hadn't agreed to before the tickets were printed and apparently weren't too happy about being listed when they hadn't yet agreed to play. So sure 'nuff they didn't show either night. However, Bob Mould and Grant Hart were there the second night and I recall Bob doing a Huskerish version of "Twist and Shout" at the end of the night.
I believe they or members of the band also played under the name Jefferson's Cock and Spiderbyte.

Checked out that Apache Plaza fansite. Got hooked in for some weird reason and spent an hour looking at gloomy photos of a mall I never set foot in. It's bizarre that people would get so attached to a mall that they would do a website about it. It kinda reminded me of that movie Dawn of the Dead ( the original ) where the walking corpses gravitate to the place they felt the most joy in. Maybe I'm kinda the same, playing all those Mats albums for lack of anything better. I got two malls, the Stones and the Mats. PS. Does anyone feel guilty for listening to Whiskeytown or Ryan Adams? The blatant rip offs are clear but they're still kinda enjoyable.

I've got a boot where Paul introduces the band as The Surfaces from Chicago.
& didn't they play as Gary & The Boners?

It would be nice if 'Bill Huck' and 'Chrystal Streitz' would leave me alone. i don't have the space in my inbox for either of you.

I think they might have played a show prior to the December 1985 benefit under the Apache Plaza moniker but I have no idea when or where.
Paul identifies the band as the Surfaces from Chicago on the Shit Hits the Fans 'boot' and also as Soul Asylum from Mpls at the infamous drunken disaster at the CBGB's. If I recall, the Gary & the Boners listing was for an earlier CBGB appearance.
And Elizabeth, there's always space in my inbox for you.
