For the purposes of this poll, the United Kingdom (and therefore Boink!) doesn't exist.

Gotta go with the jump from 'Hootenanny' to 'Let It Be'. Not knocking the 'nanny' but the evolution in Paul's songwriting on 'Let It Be' is up there with the Beatles going from 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' to 'The Walrus' or the Stones going from 'The Last Time' to 'Sympathy For The Devil'. Every song on 'Let It Be' is phenomenal, absolutely no trace of filler to be found, from the sugary pop of 'I Will Dare' to the leftover thrash of 'We're Coming Out' to the aching teen angst of '16 Blues', plus 'Unsatisfied' is the first truly dropdead gorgeous pinch-me-I'm-dreaming acoustic anthem of the 80s lost generation, and a performance by Paul that should ensure him a place in heaven, with every gasp and throaty rasp he delivers the most heartfelt vocal I've ever heard. 'Answering Machine' is arguably my favorite Mats song of all time too, and the song is pop music transcended to art. What can I say, 'Let It Be' is the greatest album I've ever heard.

I'd have to say the jump from Stink to Hootenanny. Don't get me wrong; Let it be is by far my fave of the twintone era records but I think Hootenanny really set out Paul's mission statement and showed most powerfully up to that point where he wanted to take the band (and did). Color Me Impressed, Willpower, Within your reach, Treatment Bound and Buckhill are classics but also all seem like embryonic blueprints for masterpieces Paul would craft later on.
You could argue that you never really heard the real Replacements (on long player at least) until the start of track 3 on Hootenanny - not to detract from the first two records, which I think are great in their field, its just that the intro to Colour Me always makes me feel thats the exact point they were shifting up a couple of gears. Its where Paul started to inject the really honest melancholic, personal emotions into the music (although Go and If only you were lonely had already proved his worth in that department).
