i always thought it was (seriously), "but i'm nothing!"
but now, after a few live shows i hear, "eddie vedder!"

I'm with the 'but I'm nothing' camp, although I misquoted it in my initial posts (DOH!!!). That's the way I've always heard it, but maybe it's just conditioning from repeated listens since 1984, who knows, who cares?

"Bar nothing" (which isn't even really an expression, like, say, 'bar none' for instance) He has twisted common expressions a lot farther than that before, and since.

Call me crazy, but I don't see how "Bar nothing" (which isn't even really an expression, like, say, 'bar none' for instance) makes more sense than "Wannabe something / Wannabe anything / You're my favorite thing / but I'm nothing." OK, I'm changing my mind on this one. I think you're right.

I used to think it was 'but I'm nothing' but when I read the lyrics on line I took what was there as gospel so have assumed it was 'bar nothing' ever since. I still think 'but I'm nothing' works better.
But you gotta love this song. Love the howl but also the 'I drink and I smoke and I'm feelin swell' line. And everything else about it.

so it appears that we are about evenly divided on the "bar nothing/but i'm nothing" debate!
remember to vote your conscience on this matter this november.

No clue on the "bar nothing/but I'm nothing" deal, but some other lines I see quoted in this thread I see differently, the last line "Think big, once in a while"and the other, "don't break your neck when you fall down laughing" at least that's what I hear on several live shows.

The way Paul sings 'I don't give a shit...anymaww' just before he goes into the chorus is wonderful...as real as it gets.
