Thing Thing Thing Thing Thing Thing ... once in a while!
I mean, what is that? Sums up the whole song ... it doesn't seem like a whole song, more like the energy and the music without the burden of thought, the perfect filler

God, what a great song. And you know, my favorite thing might be a line Paul doesn't even say, but I think he does and I think (if he does) it is one of the greatest lines ever in a rock and roll song:
"Don't break your neck when you fall for Madonna."
It says everything about the sham that is pop music. ("Wanna be something / Wanna be anything / You're my favorite thing." Referring to the Wanna Be craze of teenage girls in 1984 dressing like Madonna. ) This is how I've always heard this song and I love it.

I love the opening guitar line. It grabs you and just drags you in until Bam the drums kick in.

My favorite thing...everything.
& I always thought it was "Don't break your neck when you fall down on it", but hey the Madonna thing works for me.

Oh, and I think he yells, "But I'm nothing ..." not "Bar nothing."

I voted for the howl, but I gotta say I hear "bar nothing" and think it makes the most sense in context.

I will be playing this song very loudly as soon as I leave work, and I'm positive I'm going to hear "bar nothing." I will report my scientifically-validated findings in the morning.

I definitely hear "bar nothing," and yeah, it does make more sense. I went through a few live boots to confirm, but live he always seem to yell, "Bobby!" instead.

Call me crazy, but I don't see how "Bar nothing" (which isn't even really an expression, like, say, 'bar none' for instance) makes more sense than "Wannabe something / Wannabe anything / You're my favorite thing / but I'm nothing."
I really think the song is about losing yourself in fandom and idolation.
Ironic little debate we're having, dontcha think?

Upon further reflection, I'm pretty sure he's saying "Lars Ulrich."
