It's been awhile since I've checked in with the board. I was wondering what you think about Paul's guitar solos and playing on "Dead Man's Shake". Do you think it's average? Is he doing anything different in the bluesy-vein or is it standard fare? And is he copping Keith Richards' style on it?

I don't think he's straight up copying Richards cuz Paul doesn't use open-E tuning on any of the songs I can hear... I could be wrong. He's pretty committed to the basic blues structure on all the tunes and obviously he layed down an extra track for all the solo's. The solo's are all short and sweet like all the best blues recordings ala Muddy Waters. Like Keith, he goes for feeling more than technical crap which everyone hates anyways. In fact, Dead Man Shake is the easiest record to play along with because all the songs either start in A or D and you can follow the basic blues structure from there. It's a total traditional blues record. He cranked up the reverb and the gain and that's the record. I think Mono is Westy's Richards record. Kickin the Stall could've been on Exile or Some Girls easily.

I think Vampires and Failures is a dead riinger for a Stones tune. That riff....I half expect to hear Mick's voice....."cocksure and Belligerent"

Hey, thanks for the input. I don't have DMS yet and I can't seem to find it in the stores. Is it mainly under the blues category? Everytime I look in the rock section under "Westerberg" (if he's lucky to even have his own section rather than the generic "W" section), it's never there. Every time I check the blues section, it ain't there either! Well, I always thought that the best solos are ones that aren't fretboard gymnastics, up and down the scales, but those that say a lot with, like you said, feel (think Neil Young for example). Glad to hear that Paul doesn't try and be Stevie Ray Vaughn, and that he plays within his boundaries, I guess. Now if I can just find the damn CD....!!!!

Yeah, you're right...I forgot about checking under the "G" section for Grandpaboy. If all else fails, I may just have to order it online I guess....
