Did people find that info about You Am I possibly backing up Paul interesting? I did.
Here's a bit of background on them and connections to the Replacements: -Did White and Lazy on the Aussie tribute album -Connection with Alex Chilton: called fourth record #4 Record -Don't mind a drink -Have made half-hearted attempts at rock stardom (seem happy with being semi-obscure now) -Leader often referred to as one of the best songwriters around

- have been called best live band on planet - recorded first album in Minnesota (with a song called Rosedale) - #4 record had a bonus disc titled "Radio Settee" after Radio City - Tim Rogers has vague resemblance to PW (see other thread)

you am i take all the best bits of your fave bands and leave all the bits you could do without, but don't come off as mere copyists. the perfect mats/stones blend music wise, but timmys lyrics i think give them a unique edge.
by god i love this band.

Man, I am out of the loop on this band but they sound like a band I'd like. Where should I start? Which CD should I begin with?

I have #4 Record, which I love, and also their latest Deliverance which I've only listened to a couple times and was pretty disapointed with.

#4 record is the only one i couldn't find in a recent buying binge but i agree about their latest not being a good place to start i'm thinking middle period is best: #4 record, hourly daily, and up to dress me slowly. The matslike/Paul stuff is fairly evenly distributed ... that wasn't just a phase, so break out your wallet just the same

You guys are not alone in your love for YOU AM I. I've been a huge fan since a friend dargged me to see them at the Mercury Lounge here in NYC back in 1997. They've only been back sporadically since - the last time was 2002 opening a few dates for The Strokes. If they do wind up playing with Paul (and opening the shows themselves) I'm going to need to take some time off and follow that tour for awhile. And you guys who are down on the last record (Deliverence) should give it another try. It took awhile to grow on me, but now it's my fave YAI record excluding Hourly, Daily which is by far the best, IMHO.

Hey, thanks for the recommendations. Now I'm curious to hear them. Hope I can find their stuff in the CD bins.

Hey, thanks for the recommendations. Now I'm curious to hear them. Hope I can find their stuff in the CD bins. Their only album in print in the U.S. right now is the latest (Deliverence), but most of the others were released in the U.S. at one point or another so you should be able to find used copies around. Or you can order them brand new from an Aussie web retailer. I've ordered a slew of stuff through Whammo and they've always been efficient and easy to use: www.whammo.com.au/Consider starting with the best of (The cream and the crock) or the live album (Saturday night 'round ten) and go from there...

In looking over some similar "where do i start" or "what's their best" threads on the you am i message board, i see that "Hourly Daily" is generally considered the top album and the best place to start (a la Let It Be) but buyer beware: it does have strings. You gotta like yer Sgt. Pepper echoes

#4 Record is my favo(u)rite. Fairly poppy and accessible (and it includes the lyrics, which are great). Most diehards would probably say Hourly Daily. A bit the way many diehards swear by Let It Be.

Doh! I just read Kathy's news. Not backing up Paul. I didn't start the rumor. It wasn't me. Maybe they could still back him up when he comes to Australia.

You Am I are my favourite band and friends of mine, and they introduced me to the Replacements. They championed the Replacements in the press for years. The lead singer is Tim Rogers and joked Tim was his favourite album cos of the name. There is a radio performance of Here Comes A Regular somewhere. I have spent nights with them singing If Only You Were Lonely, Skyway and so much more.
(Oh is Rosedale in MPLS? Cos it's the name of a New South Wales coastal town where the song was written).

I bought 'deliverance' a couple weeks ago, and quite like it... not in the same league as a band like, say - the weakerthans, but pretty good nonetheless...
next up - #4 record...

Sound As Ever and Hi Fi Way was released in the states (thru Warner Bros) but has since been deleted. I hear it's not too hard to find second hand. Hi Fi Way tops many lists in Australia for best album of the 90s etc. Far better place to start than Deliverance.

Res, Do you live in Melbourne? What's Tim's other band like? Are You Am I playing locally anytime soon?

No I live in Sydney. Tim's new band is great, it's not as rocking, it's more Paul Kelly-ish. You Am I are taking the year off (kinda). They are supporting the Who in Australia

Tim's new solo record (Spit Polish) is very good. More acoustic and (slightly) quieter than You Am I, but by no means dull. Just simple, pretty, honest music. Highly recommended.
