The loud version does more for me than the soft one. Westy seems to be rehashing his Johnny Thunders kick on this. He even sounds like Johnny Rotten when he does the 'weeping willow' phrase. Very snotty. The last thing he did this punk was 'Down Love' which I also dig. I'm sure you've been through this before on this forum.

Agreed; version 1 takes the cake.

i'd like to hear the loud version sang with the same lyrics as the quiet version. all in all, the loud version is way better than the quiet one on the album. the quiet version he played on tour was better than the loud one.
is it just me, or does anyone else NOT like the way the quiet version was recorded on the album? vox way too up front.

I'm probably the only one, but I like the music to the original (rocker) version, but not the way the music fits the lyrics. The topic is more suited to the slow, depressing version. I also have a personal theory the he wrote the slow version first, and then rocked it up while playing around, and liked it. Nothing to base that on at all, just a hunch that its more likely to approach that topic in a more deliberate way than the rocker takes. Yes, I think he fibbed!

Maybe it's a "chick" thing, but I prefer the DVD version. He seems so much more affected by it. Maybe that comes from watching him perform it, rather than just listening to the recording. As far as the "official" versions, I guess I still prefer take 2. What's wrong with the vocals being that high in the mix? Every song on CFMT has the vox too far buried except "Crackle And Drag". Or maybe I just have trouble accepting a "snotty" suicide song.

the dvd version is stunning, if only for the fact that it's clear for all to see that it brings him to tears. i like the first version on the cd more than the second. it reminds me of bowie around the ziggy period.

I love when the drums kick in on the 1st. Both are instantly memorable and very hooky..Flo

I prefer the first one. I love the sound, overall.
If I'm listening with headphones, I cringe as soon as the vocals come in in the alt take. After the first few words, it gets better, though, and I do get to like it after a short while...but I still prefer the first.

Try listening to #1 with the balance to the right side only (the lead vocal is the left), he's got 5+ vocals of varying pitches, emotions, etc. going on plus a bunch of background sounds. Its very cool.
When you listen to the song again full left/right it changes the song completely...Flo

I'm still sticking with that version as my favorite, behind the DVD version. The only thing that bugs me is that "yeah?" at the end. I guess it adds some realness to it, but all I can imagine is someone calling him upstairs for dinner in the middle of a recording.
