ALL ABOUT ME
Well, it's all, all about me People don't doubt me This is my home I'm at ease Going to feel good Absolutely understood My neighborhood and me
And the first hand that claps I'll try not to collapse Wild as I want Mild as a breeze Miles from no one (?) Cause it's all about me
Are you tame? Are you game? Yeah, I'll be fortune Yes, and I'll be fame Oh, comin' to my show With your mo-rowoh oh (?) Unh!
Wild as I want Mild as a breeze Miles from no one (?) Cause it's all about me
Ow! There must be something missing I can't think of a thing There must be something missing It can't be, it's all about ... (howls)
[guitar break]
I took a vow A vow of celebrity Well, don't you turn your back on me I ain't done with you yet Well, it's all about me The people don't doubt me I'm as good as it gets
When the final curtain falls Hang your head (hem?) and call, Wild as I want Mild as a breeze Miles from no one (?) Cause it's all about me
Wild as I want Mild as a breeze Miles from no one (?) Cause it's all about me
All about me All about me All about me

The lines:
Going to feel good, Miles from no one (?), Hang your head (hem?) and call,
I kind of hear:
Sure do feel good, My eyes see no one, Hmm, can you hear me call

Miles from no one (?)I'm hearing: Nice to no one, "cause it's all about me AFTER FURTHER REVIEW, that isn't it. Sounds more like yours.

Scooter to thread. I think this could be more fodder for your "Paul sends not so veiled messages to his fans via his lyrics" theory.
Anybody hear "Best Thing That Never Happened?"

Actually, it's more like the sequel to "Best Thing That Never Happened."

This is a tough one, but I think it might be 'me eyes for no one' or just plain 'eyes for no one'

File this post under the "veiled messages to the audience" department.
I've been listening to this song a lot lately, and I have one burning question:
Is that line "People don't doubt me" a declarative or imperative sentence? Is he making a statement of confidence here or asking his audience to keep the faith?
I think in one way in this song he's satirizing the egomania of celebrity. In another way it's a message to the fans to stick around, maybe even a re-affirmation of his commitment to art(?).

declarative. Most that song reminds me of BEst THing that Never Happened in that he's boasting of his value...without irony or sarcasm to my ears.

I see some satire in the refrain and in the bridge:
There must be something missing I can't think of a thing There must be something missing It can't be, it's all about...
The narrator is almost too self-centered and obtuse.
When he sings, "Don't you turn your back on me," he's not only speaking to his audience but also 'celebrity' itself.

I see this song being sung specifically from the stage. He once said that he felt like a stone on a grave up on stage, and I think this is the flipside. He can also feel like, "This is my home/I'm at ease." Obviously the lines about "comin to my show" and the "final curtain" falling reinforce it. The line "miles from no one/cause it's all about me" seems more clever if you think about a guy up on stage surrounded by fans.
And instead of "going to feel good," I'm hearing "sho' nuff feel good."

I hear it as even more directly addressed to his audience, the ones most likely to question his decision to score a big Hollywood film. "Don't you turn your back on me, I ain't done with you yet." And kind of a dis at the whole Hollywood hit-making machine while he's writing songs for a guaranteed blockbuster. Actually, it's the only song from the soundtrack in which I still hear Paul (the in-song Paul we're used to).

I get the sense that Paul genuinely struggles with fear and doubt about his own worth, and every now and then he gives out a defiant shout against that feeling. I always loved the line in The Fugitive Kind where he yells, "I'm a bad idea who's time has come!!" and I hear it the same way. It's a boast with a wink.

The more I listen to this song, the more I hear it as satirical. Each line is so un-paullike ( I have no idea how to spell that)--he's the guy who's never understood, and (relatively speaking) he's never had fame and fortune-- it borders on parody. Granted I don't know where it fits in the movie, but I still hear it as a "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" to his fans. (Reiterated by the "vow of celebrity, don't turn your back on me...)
In the second "people don't doubt me" there's a slight quiver in his voice (could have been from the lung infection or whatever he claimed that made him sound too sick for Sony's taste) that sounds a little pleading, as if he's trying to convince himself.

I think that the phrase "All about me" is a double entendre.
"All about me" can be said in a self-centered way.
It can also be said in the context that these things(fame, fortune, etc.) are "all about me", as in that he doesn't actually have the fortune, fame, etc, but people think that he does because he is a celebrity.
I take this song as meaning that he's happy with his level of celebrity (this is my home....I'm at ease), but that he knows that he 's got to hold himself up to some high expectations from his fans( first hand that claps...I'll try not to collapse)

The Rolling Stones have a song called "All About You"
STONES: I may miss you But missing me just isn't you PW: There must be something missing I can't think of a thing There must be something missing
STONES: If the show must go on Let it go on without you So sick and tired hanging around with jerks like you PW: And the first hand that claps, I'll try not to collapse ... Oh, comin' to my show with your mo-rowoh oh (?) ... When the final curtain falls, hang your head and call
STONES: I'm so sick and tired hanging around with dogs like you You're the first to get blamed, always the last bitch to get paid PW: Well, don't you turn your back on me I ain't done with you yet
STONES: Oh, tell me those lies Let me think they're true I heard one or two They weren't about me PW: Well, it's all, all about me People don't doubt me ... Absolutely understood
