SOLDIER OF MISFORTUNE
I'm a soldier of misfortune and I don't know what I might do I'm a soldier of misfortune and I don't know what I might do
I gotta get leave I'm a veteran of grief
I'm a soldier of misfortune and I don't know what I might do
I gotta get leave You want rueful? I've got a roomful I'm a veteran of grief
I'm a soldier of misfortune I'm a soldier of misfortune Soldier of misfortune Soldier of misfortune
For the first ten listens, I thought he was saying "I look better in briefs" instead of "veteran of grief." I was gonna ask if that was some kind of reference to the shower scene.
The rueful/broomful line is just a best guess. It's so buried and he's got that old mournful bellow going, I really couldn't make it out. Actually it just sounds like he says "roomful" twice.
The "I don't know what I might do" line is a little creepy, in that it sounds like what suicides say.

It sounds to me like he says, "A little spoonful, a little spoonful."

I think he says " I gotta get relief" and not "I gotta get leave"
(at least the first time through)

I think he says " I gotta get relief" and not "I gotta get leave" (at least the first time through) You're probably right ... I didn't relisten to it, but when I doubt I went with whatever military word might fit. That's where I got "leave" instead of "relief," like being on leave.

Am I the only one who hears:
"I'm a soldier of misfortune and I don't know what I'm lacking"?
