I don't think I've ever read the story behind the Mats' early videos. I know I read how much they hated making them but I never heard if the label approved it or they just gave the band some money and they came back with that. I always hoped that the label was livid and the band promised that they would make a REAL video but then did it again.....AND AGAIN!

My take on the whole anti-video stance was that the record company (SIRE) knew how stubborn the Mats were in making a video, but they needed something from them. It was low-tech stuff (all the vids from Tim and PTMM), but cool nonetheless. I think SIRE knew that they couldn't sell the Mats as a video band like they did with Talking Heads. But it's quite ironic that "Bastards of Young" seems to make many Top 100 lists of music videos because it represents the integrity of the Mats as well as how it represents underground music at the time. Seeing a Mats video in black and white is how they should be seen... it's so simple yet powerful. Too bad they had to make slicker vids for DTAS and ASD, but most of us knew things were going a bit downhill with the Mats during those albums.

I've never seen any of the Mats videos.
Anybody got any links?

well, here's a link (a crappy one at that)... www.mtv.com/bands/az/replacements/audvid.jhtmlor, if you have the All For Nothing/Nothing For All comp, there are 4 videos on the 2 discs: Bastards of Young Merry Go Round Achin To Be The Ledge (put the disc in, goto My Computer, right click/explore where it says The_Mats_CD, then open the Media folder to find the videos, play them in Quicktime....)

it had me stumped too cause all enhanced cds i just explore and open the quicktime files, but this one uses an exe. file to run it which aint compatible with xp, im guessing cause it worked in my crappy one upstairs. maybe i need to go find another copy.

I tried to play the AFN/NFA videos a couple of days ago and I can't play them either. There is an error and apparently new computers (monitors?) don't go to a low enough resolution or something to play the videos.

Try getting the latest quicktime www.apple.com/quicktime/download/... But beware: do the CUSTOM install...you know they all want to take over the damn default settings for everything... Does anybody really want to use quicktime to play their mp3s?

I always prefered Windows Media Player to Quick-Time...
btw, I'm having trouble playing my All For Nothing on the computer as well. It seems, that I have to reset the resolution on my screen, before I can play the damn things. Oh well! I hate videos anyways...
Seen your video...that phoney rock 'n' roll...

It really shouldnt have anything to do with the resolution of your screen...
Higher resolution just means the video would be a little smaller (and clearer)
But like Nudge said its prolly got its own built in player that is very old.. I'll look again at EGs house to see whats up...
Yea you are right, videos suk anywayz... I cannot remember the last time I actually watched one on TV...
