for A Night sound somewhat similar to the opening of the Who's "Substitute", albeit in a slower acoustic format? Always thought the Townsend connection was a bit stronger with Mould than Westerberg.

Sure, it's evocative of The Who's "Substitute". But whereas "Substitute" is a descending riff, in Paul's riff, it sounds like the notes are going up in the scale. Nonetheless, I'd say it has that feel. Whether that riff was intentional or unconsciously evocative of something else on PW's part, only he knows.

It sounds like a fairly common chord progression....when you speed up "What a day..' it is very Substitute like. And its also the same progression as the Grateful Dead's 'Uncle John's Band'
I don't think that's what Paul had in mind...he doesnt strike me as a deadhead....
I know I've heard the Replacements do Substitute early on, but I can't find it on any of my boots. Anyone know what shows they did it at?

since What A Day for a Night supposedly comes out of that early 90s knee-to-knee songwriting session with Carole King ...
does it sound like any Carole King songs?
