Always liked this line of off Stereo...listened to it this weekend when I realized that he uses it in two different songs. Was wondering if he doing some ADDing and maybe had another line originally and got confused or just found it worked well in both and kept it.
I also like on the song "Good Day" how they backup vocals during the fade out sing "These are the Days" which serves an interesting contrast to the upbeat rock the latter was and how moody "Good Day" is.
And on a similar but completly different note.... What the was the reason they never released the song "Portland"? Its a pretty snappy number and I like the "Its too late to turn back here we go" part that they later used in "Talent Show."
Maybe Im a sucker for a running theme but all of these elements are just another reason to find the Mats and PWs work intriguing.
Any thoughts? Im by no means a Mats or PW expert so any insight is appreciated.

I think somewhere in the lyric section there was a whole thread of examples of Paul repeating himself. There's "whose suicide you're on" from World Class Fad and "Something is Me" and the "on a stage like a stone on a grave" line from "Lookin out Forever" and "Fugitive Kind." I'm sure there were more too.
I like Portland a lot too. Don't know why they didn't want to release it. Same goes for Nowhere Is My Home which is right up there with my favorite Mats tunes.

Portland...we're sorry...
Portland is a great song. I often include it when I'm making a Mats compilation disc. It's too bad that the version on All For Nothing isn't mixed too well.

Portland was scene to the last date on the "Pleased To Meet Me" tour and is renown as one of the band's most disastrous gigs ever. I forget the exact details, but if I recall:
- the band had no eyebrows due to losing a bet with openers The Young Fresh Fellows beforehand
- they dropped a couch out of a second story window
- Tommy thew his pants into the audience, but then realized he forgot to take $20 out of his pocket and asked the audience to give it back. Instead, an audience member held the money up to taunt him and ran. In an act of solidarity, Paul, Chris & Slim removed their pants too and eventually some people in the audience started throwing their pants onto the stage. In going thru those pants, Tommy found $20 and celebrated his spoils by dancing around the stage.
There was a bunch more, but this is what I remember reading. Also, having not been there, this could all just be myth. At any rate, they started some shit in Portland, and thus wrote the song "Portland" to apologize.

Thanks for that juicy account. Always wondered. A friend told that in the 2002 Portland in-store Paul showed him a scar on his wrist and said he got it in Portland swinging on a chandelier -- maybe it was that show. Kind of scary to think of naked PW swinging from a light fixture ...

So that explains the "chef's choice," but I can't hear anything Skyway in Birthday Gal -- can you give me a hint?

I doubt there's a connection. "Chef's choice" just means that Paul asked that those tunes be included on the compilation. I remember an interview around the time of the album's release where he said that that was pretty much the extent of his involvement.

Portland is a mumbled lyrics lovers dream. Ive got the tablature for it and loving playing it but theres 2 or 3 lines that just either make no sense or cant be deciphered accuratley.
Great song though.....
