I only think that Never Felt Like This Before is tolerable because it comes right before Knockin Em Back, and in that context, it's pretty humorous.

Only thing that keeps it from being one of the alltime great PW songs is the fact its a pretty short song. Had it been a little longer with maybe an expanded bridge/chorus it would have hands down been one of the alltime greats IMHO.

I like that it's short...it reminds me of one of my favorite Tom Waits songs, "Johnsburg, Illinois"...short and sweet and leaves you wanting more...some of the best songs are like that, imho

I agree with both HipCzech and BorE. It's appealing for being short, plus it'd be great to hear more. Hip, you a musician? If PW didn't write more, maybe you can take a stab?

I think it's really pretty, it sounds like it should be in a movie.

Cathy, please change your callsign... we all know that there is only one Kathy around here... TTBO, I'm diggin' the new avatar... looks like you are finally developing a sense of style, and humor... (guess zook and feelinlike100bucks are finally rubbing off on you...)

I don't care who rubs what, long as they do the poll. So far, 14 votes, 140-something visits, opinion all over the place. This song could be the most polarizing on the recent albums.

Hip, you a musician? If PW didn't write more, maybe you can take a stab? I play guitar but I couldnt carry PWs broken hi E string. Me finishing that song would be tantamount to heresy and as insulting as Fred Durst writing new lyrics for the classic Pink Floyd song "Wish You Were Here."

I did not rub TTBO I did not rub him, no no no I did not rub him in a truck I did not rub 100 bucks Though no rubbing has occurred so far I did very much like TTBO's avatar
Enough of that. This song doesn't do much for me. It has potential and I wish it were a finished tune but as is it leaves me disappointed and wanting more. However, as much as I feel disinterested in it, I don't skip over it. In the back of my mind I wait for it to go on for a minute or two longer.

I think some people feel this song is incomplete, because we’ve been programmed by modern pop music (I include Rock, R & B, and Country in this category) to believe all songs need to follow generic song structures. Why does a song need 3 choruses, 3 verses and a bridge for it to be complete? A song should be like a book, and the story should dictate the length of it. Sometimes a few words are all that is necessary.
I find the song to be the perfect length, and it doesn’t need to be padded. Padding it would’ve probably forced Paul to throw in some stuff, he wasn’t “feeling” just to comply with normal song structure. It sounds like the type of song that was written as the tape was rolling anyways, and it came out the way it did, and he probably felt that was enough. If we had a whole album of 3 verse/3 chorus songs, it would sound fairly mundane and unimaginative. It’s these little musical detours, from the norm, that make an album interesting and different from the usual pap we see lining the record racks, at the Virgin MegaBore or Tower’s (they’re all the f*ckin’ same).

Agree with much of what you wrote gtrplyr. But I also think that many/some (well, at least me) of us that may have wanted this song flushed out wanted so because the story did not appear to be completely told, as you mention. The song lays out a very strong emotion (depression/loss/fear) but I wanted to hear more about the relationship he's writing about. He's giving us a glimpse of something gone terribly awry, but choses to just share the glimpse...and selfishly, I wanted to stare a bit closer. It almost like being teased to hear it, and perhaps that is the point.
On the flip side, always thought Eyes Like Sparks could have lasted about 45 seconds...I only needed a glimpse of that situation!
I'm rambling....strike down this thread.....

Same with "Strike up the Band." I like the stereo effect of the drum machine and the basic sound/feel of the song. Had he been able to make it at least 2 minutes it might have turned into something great. As it stands now its only a "might have been."

I like that he's holding something back. If there were any more to this song I think it might ruin the mystery. (hey, we're talking about it) The overall recording of it is different than what's on the rest of the album. More spontaneous? I don't know. Didn't he mention that it was found on the same tape with Self Defense? So does that mean it was recorded around the same time as the rest of Suicane or was it re-recorded for CFMT?

I like the brevity. I think a few other songs on CFMT go on too long (Wild and Lethal, Pine Box, Dirty Diesel). Wish he had cut those a bit short too.

I'd skip it everytime, if it were'nt so short.
Least favorite song since the 2nd track off SG.
Paul on piano is just not my thing.
"I like to hear some guitar, so you can turn it up anytime now."

I hate it and I always skip it, but I don't hate because it's unfinished. I hate it because it's an awful song with a cheesy piano part, predictable melody and throwaway performance.
Paul on piano? I love "Self Defense", "The Last" and "Androgynous", and like "Good Day" despite the cheesy piano part.

Perfectly sums up my feelings on the song, Clams. & while I love "The Last" & "Androgynous", "Self Defense" has always dragged for me.
