Three outings:
1. The other night I went to a re-enactment of the Minneapolis sessions where half of Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" album were recorded, with all the sidemen (not Bob tho). A lot of intense people in their 50s were there. Note to self: we have a long way to go in establishing a Paul Westerberg cult of personality.
2. Last night I saw an opera Stephen Sondheim wrote about 10 years ago. If musicals aren't it for Paul, he could try his hand at opera. Not a rock opera, just opera. I swear he could do it. "Seein Her" is an aria, or whatever it is men sing that's like an aria. "Never Felt Like This Before" coulda been from this Sondheim opera.
3. Since then, I went to the funeral of a guy who was a huge music fan and tape trader of old, especially Beatles stuff. There was an offering of CDs as part of the ceremony, with each member of the family bringing up a small stack of his favorite music. A relative sang "Imagine" (in place of "The Long and Winding Road," listed on the program), "Let It Be" and "Lean on Me."
Three questions: 1. What's holding back the Westerberg cult, compared to the Dylan cult? 2. Would you buy a $50 ticket to a PW-penned opera, and what songs already written could be in it? 3. What PW/Mats songs would you select for a funeral service, yours or anyone else's?

Huh. I don't know why, but I am drawn to answering this highly complex post, Sworethatbitchout.

1. The Westerberg cult is too wily and uneven. Ex-frat boys, professional musicians, nerdy girls, little kids, etc. This may be wrong, but I imagine the Dylan cult to be more homogenized.
2. No.
3. I know my best friend Tina would play "Bastards of Young" on a boombox, so I don't really have any say.

1. What's holding back the Westerberg cult, compared to the Dylan cult?
Income brackets/social security benefits
2. Would you buy a $50 ticket to a PW-penned opera, and what songs already written could be in it?
Not likely unless their is the possibility of a rock n roll takeover by Paul, Tommy, Chris and Slim
3. What PW/Mats songs would you select for a funeral service, yours or anyone else's?
Left of the Dial, Can't Hardly Wait, Attitude or Let's Not Belong Together

1. Ambition - I think most Paul fans would rather just listen to the music and drink a beer. Hard core Bob fans just think to much.
2. Out of curiosity, yes.
3. The Last. Good Day. Can't Hardly Wait (original, w/ the line, "I'll be sad in heaven/You won't follow me there.")

1. What's holding back the Westerberg cult, compared to the Dylan cult? I think it's easier with Dylan. Record stores overflow with his albums, he gets airplay, you can't pick up a music magazine without an interview or blurb about him, etc. Westerberg fans have to hunt and scrounge for everything.
2. Would you buy a $50 ticket to a PW-penned opera, and what songs already written could be in it? Sure. Although I'd rather it be completely new music and not old songs made into some sort of lame story like that Billy Joel one.
3. What PW/Mats songs would you select for a funeral service, yours or anyone else's? Someone elses -- would depend on the person Mine -- Knockin Em Back (I refuse to let people be sad at my funeral)

1. What's holding back the Westerberg cult, compared to the Dylan cult? I have no idea how to answer this. Dylan came to fame in an entirely different era. Everybody knows Dylan's influence even if they aren't fans. Paul appeals mainly to "his own", and is forever labeled as an "indie-rock icon" or "post-punk icon" or whatever is being pinned to him at the moment. Or maybe Paul's fans are just an addled bunch of misanthropes who couldn't organize a child's tea party. 2. Would you buy a $50 ticket to a PW-penned opera, and what songs already written could be in it? Hah! anyone here who says, "no" is a f*cking liar (Of course I'd say no and still be the first in line at the box office.) 3. What PW/Mats songs would you select for a funeral service, yours or anyone else's? I wouldn't . I 'm not likely to be choosing the music anyway, since I'm usually the one with the weird taste in music.

That might be called transference in psycho babble.

That's pretty cynical. We would lie because you do? That might be called transference in psycho babble. I think she was more making a joke about our crazy fandom. Sure, we SAY that we wouldn't see an opera by Paul, reinerating our "cooler than you" music nazi exterior, but the truth is most of us would watch an instructional how-to-mime video if we knew Paul had something to do with it. I tend to agree. Well, not with the mime thing. Nobody deserves a mime. OT: It took me forever to come up with a decent analogy. I tried a variety of annoyingly awful people before the mime thing, including Kathie Lee and Celine Dion but they were just too horrible. I would not endure Celine Dion, not even for Paul... *Disclaimer*: No, I am not aiming at anyone specifically. This is a generalization, which I know is a HUGE mistake considering the sensitive nature of most PW fans, which is in turn also a generalization, so never mind, I'm f*cked
We'd like to Thank the good people of Alowishes, Kansas for their courtesy and livestock. No mimes, music nazis, or penguins were harmed in the posting of this message. A clown got punched in the face, but he really deserved it. Stupid freaky ass clowns. This is completely ridiculous. Any resemblence to anything live or dead is a figment of your f*cking imagination and the producers would encourage you to seek help immediately. Hi Mom.

I respectfully disagree. Do not assume that because a person hangs around a message board that they are a fan-atic of the topic at hand. And don't get me started on the "music nazi" thing. Please. Don't.

Sorry I can't subscribe to mass generalizations (even if you try to deny you are doing it later). YOU maybe obsessed to the point of certifiable mental illness over PW, but that doesn't mean all of us are. I don't even care for PW that much as a solo artist, but he is a major part of one of my favorite bands of all time. So please next time KGP and FaithNia walk to the light and just admit that YOU are the liars and the lunatics and leave the rest of us out of it. If you guys don't cut it out, I am going to hire some mimes to come over to your house, even though I am sure that Weapons of Mime Destruction are illegal.
