I got to thinking...after the numerous lyric based discussions on this board, that the "I ain't gonna give you no lyrics" stance is really a clever Westerbergian marketing ploy.
So many people have found so much meaning in their version of the lyrics, PW surely could not have such devoted fans if we knew all the words! Especially because I bet sometimes our guesses are better than the real words!
Think about it! We are just victims of his tri-pronged marketing attack: 1. He mumbles, stumbles, and slips right by important words in songs. 2. He sings every song different in concert anyway. 3. The aforementioned lack of lyric sheets - those of which that do exist *are probably wrong anyway!*
I've said it before and I'll say it again - this Westerberg guy ain't right.

Hey Elegant mule,if you have a four track you can slow it way down, and can pretty much hear all the words. Also,it does cost alot more money to put words on the CD,but what would be cool would be some liner notes,i know he had some on suicane(special edition)..............
But you are right ,and thats what makes him so good... ........later

You might be on to something there, Emu.
I am so pro-liner notes it hurts. Hootenanny's were the PW/Mats high point, since they really took a stab at the genre. Sorry Ma's commentary is in second place. But I never saw those special editions, except behind the counter, and at the time I thought, "What kind of lame-o would pay extra for more crap from that guy?" The last few albums' liner notes have been o.k., but maybe he should hire it out. Not sure if AFN/NFA counts.

But Torte, I have a couple of those special editions, and I am convinced that any lyrics contained therein are merely to throw off the truth seekers. Whatever PW writes is not usually akin to what he says.
And I ain't got no 4 track - hey, has anybody played the records backwards? I think there might be something layered in "Customer." ;D
