Hi, I'm fairly new to The Replacements. I'm reading up on the history of them, etc. and I keep seeing them referred to as the Mats. How did they get this nickname?
Thanks

I thought it was like a play on words The Re Place Mats or The Mats. I don't really know if that is right or where it came from though.

don't listen to these guys...here's the real story. the original name of the band was indeed the Mats' it wasn't the the Impediments as legend has it. yeah, in about 1979 the boys saw Swedish National junior hockey team play in Minn. the Swedish team was led by a the rugged red-headed phenom named Mats Sundin, who was 10yrs old at the time. The boys were so impressed and inspired by the young Swede they started to write tunes based on his hockey talents. So they went to Peter Jespeson of Twin-Tone records and presented themselves as "The Mats" with tunes based on hocey player Mats Sundin. Jesperson liked the tunes, but didn't think it was such a good idea to let people know the songs were about a swedish hockey player and he also offered the Replacements as an alternative name which the boys reluctently agreed to. And, the rest is history. Mats Sundin- the inspiration for the Replacements

In the above picture, is he scoring a goal or making a bowel movement?
(and, the Mats got their nickname from an old Def Leppard song)

$100 - are you *always* the one with the best implausible-yet-fairly-logical story?
(If so, I salute you. )
I agree with Billy, it's easier to say "the Mats" when you're drunk.
