ok, now that i have your attention.... here's the deal, monkeypants. when i heard crackle & drag live a few times, i was sooooo blown away by it. i heard that it would be on the cfmt, and i was ecstatic. then i heard TWO versions would be on cfmt. i soiled myself. but... a funny thing happened to crackle & drag on the way to cfmt. the "original" take blew me away upon first listen. i was floored by it; thinking "what a cool interpretation" of the ballad i heard on tour." the "alt. version" kicked in, and i was let down. way down. vox are way too loud (almost sounds a capella), drums kicking in the middle, just overall a very weak version. i mean, paul playing/singing it live was so much better! needless to say, though, cfmt is a tremendous album, and suffers very little due to the, in my opinion, weak version of the ballad crackle & drag. the electric version more than makes up for it. sorry for the bitching (i really wasn't), but i just thought it was very strange. to me, crackle & drag seemed like it was the "centerpiece" song. the reason cfmt was to exist. i found it weird that THAT was the version of the song paul chose.

amen brother. well said.
my read is he knew he had a gem with the first version. then he improved the lyrics and he couldn't stand to leave them off the album.
but as long as we're dissing CFMT tracks, may I add that early favorite Pine Box has already almost rotted out for me.

i JUST listened to pine box (as long as we are talking about it), and i like it more & more.
i think that you might be right, though, about the lyrics for c & d (d'ya like that?). the weaker version "alt" has much better lyrics, and indeed even the elusive "flow".
i love the "what's the matter here?" type line starters... maybe a "complete" version of c & d will be buried on the 99th track of folker.

the best take of C&D for me is on the Portland instore boot. The show was falling apart towards the end as he was forgetting lyrics to alot of the songs then he ends with a very heartfelt C&D. Does anybody have video of this show?

The Guthrie versions of the song nearly made me cry. I was so moved I called my best friend and my (then) boyfriend on my cell and let the song run on their voicemail. (No, I didn't talk to them at all - I just dialed the phone and set it on the armrest of my seat. I ain't that tacky.) The CFMT versions were a revelation to me - and not a good one at first. Now I keep flipping back and forth over which one I like, usually going with the first.

I was disappointed in all the official versions of C&D that appeared this year. The song was perfect as it was being done on the tour. Esp. the version done at the Bowery Ballroom - that one Paul did with a lyric sheet so he got 'em all right AND it was filmed - really bums me out that version didn't make it on to the DVD.

Kathy, any way we can make a request to Paul to put out the complete Bowery footage for us? You know, maybe a petition or something. No seriously.

Kathy, any way we can make a request to Paul to put out the complete Bowery footage for us? You know, maybe a petition or something. No seriously. What we should do is make a peittion begging him to never release the complete Bowery footage. That would greatly increase our chances of it being released k.
