When asked I can only compare the Westerberg fanbase to a bunch of vampires. Now stay with me here! Passed the obvious, pale, hates the sun, & has no use for outsiders, There is another trait I always found intriguing. A vampire "sires" (not a reference to a certain record label) another, they then learn the ways of the vampire through this individual & then so on & so on down the line. The vampire at the top of this pyramid is the "Master "of a certain lineage.
My brother Tommy got me it the Replacements at the rip old age of 13 (1985) I then turned a buddy of mine onto the Replacements when I was 20 ( he was like a junkie, I lgave him Tim & PTMM & he came back drooling!) & he went of to college and turned a bunch of people onto the mats. He always gave me the credit, which i quickly passed on to my brother who we now refer to as the "Matster"
Who's your "matster" ?
gravy ( and no I'm not some Goth/D&D/Buffy freak!.......... anymore.)

Some kid at my brother's party who put on Stink and lit off fireworks onto the old lady's roof across the street ...
and Robert Christgau, who had to tell me about this great local band via his NY based column

A guy who worked for me gave me his tape of PTMM and I was hooked. He was introduced to the Mats by someone in his band.

Slim Dunlap, since I saw him play before I knew who the Mats were, and Cities 97, for playing Don't Tell A Soul as the "midnight album" one fateful night. Or maybe I should just say "college" since both these momentous events occured within a couple weeks of each other at the beginning of freshman year.
(and Buffy was the bomb)

I'm my own coven-master. I bought "Pleased To Meet Me" and "Stink" solely based on the cover art (which I used to do a lot as a teenager-- As I remember I was hardly ever disappointed). Also cool band names would also spur a sale (Mother Love Bone, Under Neath What, etc.).

I did too until this season, didn't want to watch Spike wreck another series. And aside from quality issues, no-Cordelia sort of decreases the motivation to tune in... Tell me about it, definite coolness deficit compared to most of the folks around here.

I got into the Mats via WGBW, a long defunct college radio station at University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Circa early 80s it was stacked with a bunch of punk rock boys as DJ's and a few of them had the gall to play tracks off "Hootenanny." The monsters had no idea what they were doing.

I graduated from there! COOL! I DJ'ed at the station (if you can call background music to the University Closed Circuit Bulletin Board a station) for a semester and they didn't have anything. You had to bring your own stuff!

this is a pretty interesting thread. and somewhat true, too. i suppose mtv is the "sire" who introduced me to the mats, but that was just for dtas. i mean, i dug the album, and all, but i didn't know about the past of these "replacements".
my friends uncle who was always a little "out there" (MUCH younger than my friend's mom). kind of reminded me of a long haired vietnam vet who drifted from town to town... which is accurate except for the vietnam vet part. well, my friend & i picked him up in the ford pinto at the greyhound station one time, and we were playing dtas on the boombox in the backseat. he says, "do you like this band?" we answer in the affirmative. he proceeds to tell us they have older songs with titles like "fvck school" "goddamn job" & "gary's got a boner".
well, that was all my teenage mind needed to hear, and the rest is history.
have i told you this story before?
