I forget if this is a new variant on an old thread or not but:
What are the indisputable musical lifts in PW/Mats songs?
(Not just "Stonesy" or "Beatlesque" but out-and-out unabashed red-handed direct quotes)
Such as perhaps the two most recent ones: - "Please Please Me"- Beatles ("My Daydream") - "Hwy. 61 Revisited" - Dylan ("My Dad")

-"Anything But That" - Faces ("My Fault") -"Between Love and Like" - About 6 songs before it ("Silent Film Star")

(Not just "Stonesy" or "Beatlesque" but out-and-out unabashed red-handed direct quotes) You mean lyrically? Like 'Kickin' the Stall' from the Stones' 'Bitch?' Or the line 'she never finishes, she abandons' copped from Paul Valery's 'a poem is never finished, only abandoned?'

I was thinking musically, but lyrical lifts that close would be worth tracking too.

And the guitar riff in "Kicking the Stall," is "Waiting on a Friend." I never noticed that line in "Bitch" before. And kgp pointed out recently that "Hold My Life" contains some lines from a children's book (the "razzle dazzle drone" part). Waitress in the Sky evokes Spirit in the Sky, but maybe not quite enough to be considered an full blown lift.

Isn't it "Positively 4th Street" (rather than "Hwy. 61 Revisited")? thanks for the correction. I'm terrible with Dylan titles. I don't think there's a one that makes the least sense to me. Maybe "Lay Lady Lay" but that's about it. (Guess that's like that comedian and "Tim" from that other thread) Back to the list: "Oh Darling" - Beatles ("Mr. Whirly") and i contend but no one agrees so I guess it's very disputable: "I'm Only Sleeping" - Beatles ("I Will Dare")

"Lookin' Out Forever" & "The Ledge" -same chord structure, same theme. Must also mention "Garys Got A Boner", courtesy of Mr. Ted Nugent.
And that line stolen from the poet Tom Petty....

I still think that brief strat sounding riff during the fragment of "Who know Where the Time Goes" at the end of "Folk Star" sounds like something snatched from Jimi Hendrix's, "Little Wing"... but it could just be my mind playing tricks on me. OK- a VERY disputable lift, but I like the idea anyway!

What's that mats song where they play a little snatch of Perry Mason or horror movie melody: "Dumm-de-Dumdum ... Dumm-de-Dumdum-DAAAAANH"? Is that on "I Don't Know"?

Paul lifts his own riff and basic chord pattern from Alex Chilton over and over again
Talent Show All Shook Down (Alex Chilton slowed way down)
spring to mind immediately. There's more, just can't think of them right now...

Which line you talkin' about?
If it's "A rebel without a clue", it's the other way around my friend. If not, please 'scuse me.

The Razzle Drazzle Drone bit from hold My Life is from a cartoon show. Something about a Mr. Wizard I think. I remember the cartoon from the late sixties or early seventies.

There were a few shows in 87 where he played 3 songs and said they were basically the same. One was Buck Hill then into Kiss me on the Bus and I dont remember the other.
