Not that I agree, but I was really dissappointed by Tim when it came out. It got panned pretty hard in the press at the time as well.
The songs are all there, and they are great, but it just sounds awful. Westerberg has stated he had a blown speaker in a Marshall 4+12 cabinet at the time, and that is the speaker they miked for recording.
The drums are a wash of ride cymbal and generic snare.
The bass and vocals sound fine though.
The lead guitar never gets up a head of steam (though this can be attributed to B. Stinson not being in great shape).
You have to admit it sounds really crappy.
I really think a different producer could have made all the difference in the careers of those guys.

Ouch! and I thought I was critical. Some observations and thoughts:
The Joshua Tree by U2-Well, he has a point. This was the album that made me start to dislike them.
Nevermind by Nirvava-"Smell's Like Teen Spirit" is this generations Stairway to Heaven? I thought that was "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure.
Bitches Brew By Miles Davis-"too bad you can't fucking stand this shrill, rambling, incoherent mess" Yeah, I agree. I had a roomate in college who was really into jazz and he would play this while he got stoned and mutter, "yeah, yeah" constantly.
Whats The Story Morning Glory by Oasis-Yeah, the lyris are lame. But I will admit, I do like it. Flame away......
Heaven Up Here by Echo and The Bunnymen-Well, I thought it was their worst album, unless you count Reverberation.
Vs by Pearl Jam-Ok, any Pearl Jam needs to go.
13 Songs by Fugazi-Yeah, combining Monor Threat and Dag Nasty was not a good idea.
Tommy by The Who-As much as I like the Who, I really hated this album.
Pretty Hate Machine by NIN-I don't quite see his gripe here. It was a good disk.
Morrissey by Morrissey-Yeah, he wasn't very good without the rest of the band. Johnny Marr was great.
Nothing Shocking by Jane's Addiction-Great album. Now I think this guy needs to pull the glue bag all the way over his head. Did he like Ritual de Lo Habitual?
Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd-Ok, that one is a bit funny.

This article was tossed off in about five minutes. He can't even keep his premise straight, mixing canonized albums with mainstream shit like Celine Dion. These kind of lists are just designed to manufacture controversy and drive up pageviews anyway.

Oh yeah, and as to Tim. It was mixed by Tommy Er..something who was actually Tommy Ramone. Supposedly the guy was nearly deaf and he couldn't hear what he was mixing so he just made everything louder and that is another reason Tim sounds "muddy".

I don't think that Pleased To Meet Me sounds any better (and it is probably my favorite, as far as songs go)...
It is overly compressed, and the levels (-4db on the two-track stereo mix?..) way too low...
Recorded here at Ardent, I can't believe how much it pales in comparison (sonically) to the Big star records recorded there 15 years prior...
Perhaps, these were the days when mastering was still optional...

Right on BW. Bad idea indeed. I thought the thing about Paul wanting them all to put tacks in the heels of their shoes and stomp during one of the songs they were doing for Tim was funny.

Tim may be badly produced (no doubt about that), but you can't deny that:
Here Comes a Regular
Bastards of Young
Left of the Dial
Little Mascara
Hold My Life
Swingin Party, etc...
all overcome bad production. A good song is all that matters. You could record it on a boom box, and it will still stand out if it's trully great...
Just listen to those old Robert Johnson recordings. The recordings are lo-fi at best, but they're timeless nonetheless.

You are 100% correct in IMHO Gtr. Those songs are great. I like Tim, don't get me wrong. As for U2, not that JT was bad, I just started to dislike the bands persona.

Seems to me that Joshua Tree was when U2 starting taking themselves a little too seriously, much about the same time that Sting did likewise. We could probably start a thread of bands that took the "star" thing a bit too far.

Yeah, they lost me around that Zooropa period! They finally redeemed themselves, with the last album somewhat (less Bono/Fly stuff, and more heartfelt songs). I agree with you here - I didn't mind parts of Zooropa but I loved Joshua Tree and the last one. Great songs and less bombast. As for Tim, it probably isn't the best sounding album but I am no studiophile so all the technical sound stuff is lost on me. Give me good songs and volume and that's about all I need. |

i would have given anything to have a roommate in college who was into miles davis. it would have been way better than the crap she adored and listened to constantly-- she was a big fan of the jam band bullshit (dave matthes/blues traveller/new potato expressorsomethinglikethat).
needless to say our living arrangement only lasted a semester.

I feel your pain Jodi. I had 3 roomates and the one into jazz was also into "jam bands" and another was all about the jam bands. Some days I swore if I had to hear that damn Phish song, "Laugh and Laugh and Fall Apart" one more time I was going to take a hockey stick and administer a "wood shampoo" to the guy. At least the other roomate was into most of what I was into. And to make matter worse, the college I went to was full of neo-hippies. Oh, the horror.................

In my time, I only wish that the Grateful Dead were the worst college roomie type offese.
I was mocked for listening to older T Rex albums, while down the hall Bob Seger, Kiss, REO Speedwagon, Yes, and Emerson,Lake, and Palmer were blasing away.
In French, the instructor, who was a cutie from France, asked us early 20 somethings what we listened to. I volunteered Cheap Trick and Elvis Costello, and most the class snickered, I think because EC wore those black rimmed glasses and looked geeky, not to mention the appearance of Rick Nielsen. Then the local frat boy offered that he really liked Eddie Money, and the Chi Omega bimbo chipped in, "yeah, he is cool". I had to go back to my room and listen to Lou Reed's Street Hassle at the 11 setting! Funny I still remember it, after all these years (paraphrased from Paul Simon, the French teacher's favorite)
