saw soul asylum last night.in nyc at bowery ballroom..great show, good to see them out there again...and i gotta state the obvious, tommy stole the show, jumping around, shooting his hilarious grin all over...although, seeing him playing bass again was a little strange without the boys around him...it seemed like a couple of times he was looking to goof around, (something not in soul asylum's repretoire), but there was no paul there to play off of...other than that he was a great addtion, and added some ooph to there already rocking set up..sopme great new songs as well, for their upcoming LP....and as usual michael b pounds the skin like the black buddha that paul say he is

I was also at the Soul Asylum show. It was fun to see him playing bass. In terms of goofing off, I've seen Soul Asylum do plenty of that over the years, but as they are still reeling from Karl's death, it didn't really seem appropriate. That said, Tommy was totally great and obviously aware of his role. He's a total rock star, full of swagger. As I was watching him, I was reminded of the quote from Jim Dickinson, " Tommy Stinson IS rock'n'roll."

I too was fortunate enough to catch this show. Amazing performance considering only three days of practice. Having seen Bash & Pop and Perfect twice, it was strange to see Tommy step to the side, without a mic, simply playing the role of bass rock star. Make no mistake, others rock, but Tommy is the only performer I've seen who bleeds rock & roll on par with Paul. And Michael B - simply the best drummer I've ever heard live. And you can tell he enjoys it, which is nice, there's no pretense. He & Tommy seemed to carry on quite well - when Tommy wasn't hamming it up for the fans, he was back by Michael's kick drum saying something or another, usually met by a smile from Michael. Several times as I saw the two locked in on a slammin' rythym, I thought to myself how that would sound behind High Time or Far As I Know....
As for the band - Dave & Dan seemed to genuinely enjoy being back on stage and ripped through the 90min or so set. The new songs from a forthcoming album due in March sounded particularly strong. A national tour is being arranged (wonder how Mr. Axl feels about that). Suffice to say that if SA was a decent band before, the addition of Michael & Tommy makes them a potentially great band.
