UNCUT: A far cry from delivering Suicaine Gratifaction and being told by Capitol to go away and write some hit singles.
PW: At first, they said, 'Go and make an intimate record', and then at the eleventh hour they came in and said, 'We don't hear any singles here. Why don't you go away and try to write a couple of hits?' So I went away and reworked "Whatever Makes You Happy" and a few others, but they don't mean anything to me. The ones I remember are "Self Defence" and "It's A Wonderful Lie" and "Bookmark", those are the real ones that will carry on.
Have these reworked Suicaine songs ever surfaced? I'd sure be curious to hear 'em.

I find it interesting that Paul picks "Self Defence" and "Bookmark" ("It's a Wonderful Lie seems like an obvious choice) as the ones that will "carry on." I wonder if that's because these songs, are two, that stand out, as being the most un-Paul-like, in his oeuvre.
They both sound, like they could have been written by someone else, like Randy Newman, or even Rodgers and Hart. They both have some interesting, harmonically diverse structures, and I have a feeling Paul's proud of the fact, that he was able to suceed in "writing outside of hiimself" and pulling off two songs that have a "timeless" feel to them.
Of course, these two songs, never seem to get played live by Paul. I guess on the next tour, Paul better bring a Piano.

Supposedly the unreleased Suicaine documentary contains a piano version of "Whatever Makes You Happy." I think the "reworked" version is the one that's on the album.

They seem un-Paul-like because they are so emotionally open, where usually he is so guarded, but when I heard these songs, I felt like, "finally, the guy is singing the truth."
