Hi all, I wanted to put this podcast on your radar that is a 90 minute audio documentary about how Pleased To Meet Me was created. I interviewed Bob Mehr and Luther Dickinson for this and used snippets of vintage Paul Westerberg audio from the 1987 Warner Bros. interview with Julie Panebianco. Here's the direct link to listen wherever you get your podcasts. The Replacements twitter shared this last week and wrote, "A 90-minute must-listen podcast about the making of a ‘Mats classic." I hope you enjoy the podcast. Thanks! Dan lifeoftherecord.com

Brilliant, Dan! Thank you for sharing this. Excited to checkout your episode on Bows & Arrows, too—I love that record. But up first: Pleased To Meet Me. Love hearing Paul’s voice in these interview snippets, that Upper Midwestern English—a lost world.

the best podcast I have ever listened to. Very enlightening insights. Thank you so much! Bob has so much insight into the band from all of his research over the years and Luther had so many hilarious stories. It was a thrill to get to work with them on this. Glad you enjoyed it!

The Walkmen were another great American rock and roll band that never quite got their due. Paul's voice was so striking to me too, especially since he sounds just like all of my relatives in Minnesota. His interview with Julie Panebianco was so revealing and he had a great rapport with her. Thanks so much for listening!

Finally got around to listening..... Such a great listen, I loved hearing Paul from 87 discuss the album, not to mention Bob Mehr, who’s always great. Luther Dickinson, I could listen to him all day.... I really want to get a copy of his dad’s book one of these days. Anyway, thanks for such a great podcast. I’ll have to check out some other episodes.

Really appreciate the feedback!

Fun to hear Paul so open, his guard down. Is his interview with this gal available to listen to in full anywhere on the web?
Awesome take on Bows & Arrows, too. I’d always thought that record was recorded at Marcata—cool to know a lot of it came together at Sweat Tea in Mississippi. Merriweather Post Pavilion was recorded there, too. Also, I thought Ham wrote most of the tunes! Didn’t appreciate how much the other guys brought to the band. I miss The Walkmen—their solo stuff just doesn’t hold up.
Thx again, Dan. Great stuff.

The Paul interview with Julie Panebianco is available on cassette with the Pleased To Meet Me box set. I'm not sure if it's available online though. That's great to hear you enjoyed the Bows & Arrows episode! I learned a lot too since I thought it was all recorded at Marcata and didn't realize so many band members wrote, like Walter Martin writing the drum part to "The Rat." They are all incredible musicians. Like the 'Mats, I'm hoping they reunite someday for some more shows. Thanks a lot for listening!

I really want to get a copy of his dad’s book one of these days. Thanks for the heads up on Dickinson's book. I just bought a copy for myself for Christmas. I had no idea he played piano on 'Wild Horses'.

I had no idea he played piano on 'Wild Horses'. I wasn't aware he had written a book either. Just checked it out, looks good, ordered a copy off of Amazon.

File under 'in case anybody is wondering': The Dickinson autobiography(I'm Just Dead I'm Not Gone) is fantastic. Read it in three days. He has a nice style and I hope his novel in progress is eventually resurrected and published.
I especially liked the section about the Stones at Muscle Shoals. The description of Jim's first impression of Keef is lovely:
"Keith. He walked into the room like a scarecrow, mumbling to himself and chuckling over his private joke. His skin was greenish blue or bluish green. His best tooth hung from his left ear and formerly belonged to a cougar. Tied scarfs and bracelets hung from his skeletal arms like ragged, bloody bandages on a wounded soldier. The front of his projectile spiked hair was peroxide orange, like a high school harlot from 1957, the kind of girl who wore mouton. Keith Richards was a pretty picture."

I just picked up a copy as well.. Loving it so far, the man could tell a story! Not up to the Stones yet, don’t have much chance to read with a one year old loose in the house at the moment, might take me a while. Plus I’m reading Slow Days, Fast Company at the same time, which is a page turner too.

Dan, holy mackerel. Mount Eerie?! Phil’s world was a huge piece of my teenage and college years in Seattle (The Glow, Pt. 2 and No Flashlight especially). Great interview. Never thought there could be another ‘Mats fan also into The Microphones, The Walkmen, etc. Thanks for all this.
