I don't why, but the 'Love Untold' thread starting me thinking about other songs by Paul that have been mentioned very infrequently on this board over the years. I have had "Hot 'Un" stuck in my head for days now. Such an upbeat, joyous song. Time sure has flown. The lyrics lodged deep inside my brain are these: 'I got an earring that I dangle from' and 'Check out that girl on that belly button' www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPEbFkrrLN0I am pretty certain this video did not coincide with the Grandapaboy release. I still have a grandapaboy 45 with a drawing of Elrod on the crapper (I Want My Money Back b/w Undone) Paul seemed to really let go with this project and produced some great, largely overlooked music. Psychopharmacology, anyone? What other little gems deserve an airing out?? Send me back to the piles.

I always liked "Wonderful Copenhagen". I like how he changed "salty old queen of the sea" to "salty old bitch" in the last verse
And I like how he got a groove on that song, with the rhythm. That kind of rhythm though reminded me of "Bang a Gong" by T Rex. More interesting is how he covered this tune in his own way and arrangement---and more intriguing is why this song though?

What a Day for a Night just popped on my Spotify. Simple but a good tune nonetheless.

And his “What Kind of Fool Am I?” on Dead Man Shake. Get me some goddam tissues.

Speaking of songs fit for tissues. How about this forgotten number by Paul and the boys: 'Only if we Must' ?
This song makes me deliciously sad in a way that only Neil Young's (Buffalo Springfield) 'Flying on the Ground is Wrong' can equal.
ONLY IF WE MUST
You learn from the past Well I reminisce You look to the future I see maybe at best A kiss for good luck Save it for an honest Joe It's too late to worry I guess I'll just go
So forgive me And maybe We won't turn and rust
Only if we must Only if we must
Saints never preach And angels don't fly Down by the beach Where the seagulls die
I asked you not to breathe You let out a sigh I asked you not to breathe That's for you to decide
So forgive me If need be Forget about us Only if we must
Angels wait on the beach For the time run I let out a sigh If I reminisce And you're the past Ah, maybe at best Our epitaph
Forgive me And if need be I will turn to dust Forget me if you must Only if you must If you must

2012!? Shit. I didn't think it'd been that long. Yeah, just like Stain Yer Blood or Everything Goes Wrong, it's definitely one of those best-song-that-never-made-it-on-an-album songs.

I have to say I’ve never heard this song... this kicks most demo cuts to the curb. How was this left off that album?

Wasn't Only If We Must on that 4 CD bootleg thing going around some years ago? It had a lot of outtakes from Please to Meet Me sessions and I think there was some other of Paul's demos. Things like "Hard to Wave in Handcuffs".
I just re-listened to "Learn How to Fail" and really like how sparse it is, the haunting reverb, Chris' drum fills, and Tommy's dynamic bass work. There is just this vibe I get from the song that I really like but I can't explain what it is, I just like it. The way the song starts building and you think it's gonna have more guitars come in but it doesn't. And I like that, it builds but the intensity is in Paul's vocals while the guitar is still muted and clean.

This one (below) feels almost “of a piece” with it—again, anyone know anything about it? It’s Tommy singing right?

Nice pick Bside! 'All That I Had' is heart-wrenching:
"Me and yesterday hopped on a track I swear to God neither of us ever coming back"
"Gave a life, got a living"
Another obscure one? 'You're Getting Married'.
