Yeah I want it.
Too bad our Record Store Day source is in the mall. Can I brave that?
Maybe in the evening when the yahoos have left.

I worked up the resolve to go to the mall. Nasty place on any day, today like a scene out of Dante.
But I got it. Hope PW makes enough from my purchase to buy a cup of coffee, at least. Will report later on sound and pressing quality.

OK, just listened to Stereo.
The first thing to say is damn, what a great group of songs this is. I really find them as moving as just about anything he's done. I mean lyrically, though there's the requisite tension and release in the guitar parts that make them work. And the subject matter—approaching middle age, friends dying young, marriage not quite working—well it has the power to choke me up, and has since I first heard it.
We sure are lucky that our favorite rock star isn't just some dummy, whose dumb songs we have to put up with. Rhyming "Valentino" with "seen him though"—I mean, come on. Clever but perfectly natural and casual. "One thing I love I can no longer stand" is about the best line anybody's ever written about a difficult marriage. It's kind of sad that more people don't know how good these songs are. But fuck 'em, who cares.
Oh yeah, as for the vinyl, my copy was flat and dead quiet, so I'm glad I picked it up. The sound was good. Something about flipping it over and playing side two held the whole thing together for me.

I haven't listened to Mono yet or studied the packaging, but I thought Stereo sounded really nice. Haven't listened to these records in years and it was really nice to revisit.

Going to look at Amoeba today! Stereo is, hands down, my favorite collection of PW solo stuff. As someone mentioned above, I agree, it’s a shame these songs aren’t more widely known. “Got You Down”? “Nothing To No One”? “High Time”? “Silent Film Star”? Sheesh. I used to play “High Time” on a jukebox at this dive in middle-of-nowhere, Idaho hoping someone else would catch on. In true ‘Mats fashion it’s likely no one ever did. But Paul earned a quarter or two.
I think if PW released a similar thing today—double album, heart-on-the-sleeve songwriting, good production/recording quality —it’d be a (ok, minor) hit. The music mags of the internet weren’t established enough to blow him up in ‘04. Today he’d get tons of press if he played the game a bit (a tall order, I know).

I went out to the store towards the end of the day to see what they had and there was one left. Bingo. Sounded great and I think last evening may have been the first time I actually, patiently, listened to the entire 2 records. I've always reached for MONO over the years. With time behind, STEREO has a new sound and meaning for me. Something pointless...the store where I bought it is the same that I went to 30(!!!!)yrs ago for an in-store signing (no performance) during the DTAS tour...The great, great House of Guitars. What a treasure the place is...music store, museum, circus, and most importantly, community gathering place; it's legendary. Everyone is repped there. If you ever have the chance check it out, I recommend it..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=g42E3v1ahGkwww.youtube.com/watch?v=lAS_uFfX_IE

I couldn't bring myself to pay $35+ for this (at Amoeba in LA) — especially when the CDs are languishing in the "last chance" dollar bin at the same store! Seriously, $1! The artwork looked like a scan of the original CD art, blown up and pixel-y. What a crock. How does it sound? Any cool liner notes or anything inside? Maybe after the Christmas shopping cools down.

Fair enough on the price, but it is 2xLP, so it's not gonna be a $20 package. CDs cost nothing to make and they're quickly becoming antiquated as a viable format. I don't think they'll ever go away, and there will probably be a resurgence eventually, but you can barely give them away these days. $35 for a 2xLP limited edition set seems a little inflated to me, but not by much. I don't think you see many new 2xLPs for much less than $30. I expect the art was cell-phone quality to begin with and it's not clear, for sure but I don't think it's pixelated or an actual scan of the CD. I'm sure Vagrant had the best available for the CD and used that for the LP too. They're not hacks and wouldn't cheap out like that. I'm not sure there's anything extra in the packaging that's not part of the CDs, and I haven't listened to Mono yet, but Stereo sounded really nice on vinyl, so if you're into vinyl, if you want to support the label (and Paul) and encourage them to do more stuff like this, and don't mind spending the cash for records of CDs you already have, then I'd encourage you to buy it. But I don't blame you if this one just isn't for you either.

Yeah, there's nothing new here, no new artwork in the gatefold, no goodies or tidbits, same little spiel from PW ("What you have here are songs...") that's in my copy of the double CD.
Still, I'm glad I bought it. For one thing, I like records and listen to them.
More importantly, I just like buying Westerberg/Replacements material. When it comes out, I buy it. I'm a fan, I suppose.
I'm not a fan of anything else. Not in this way, at least. See something, buy something, no hesitation.
It's actually kind of a relief. I don't have any irritating consumerist doubts, like I have with everything else. Should I buy it? Should I not? Is this the best deal? Will something superior come out later?
This is the one little area of my life as an abject shopper where I don't have to ponder and second guess. I just do it. I enjoy that experience. And I like thinking that PW might get a few extra bucks out of it, too.

....I'm not a fan of anything else. Not in this way, at least. See something, buy something, no hesitation. I envy that. I've got a couple dozen it seems. I'll buy anything Cheap Trick, Keith Richards, DBT, Lucero, Hüsker Dü/Mould, on and on. At the same time, I passed on the last two reissues of the Replacements stuff. I had everything on vinyl and CD, most CDs original and the first remasters, which had the bonus tracks. ... And I like thinking that PW might get a few extra bucks out of it, too. I'm sure he gets something. He for sure had to approve the release, which could have been part of the original deal back when he signed on with Vagrant. It also shows the label that there is interest and maybe next year consider CFMT or Folker or something. In this case, it's maybe not as important since there weren't that many pressed and they'll sell out for sure. I'm not sure if there's another pressing slated or not, it's very possible, but for new releases it's really important.

Yeah, and I have to be honest. There are things I see, on ebay for instance, that I don't buy but want. I'd really like to have a first press of Sorry Ma, with original liner notes, like this: www.ebay.com/itm/Replacements-Sorry-Ma-Forgot-To-Take-Out-The-Trash-LP-Twin-Tone-1st-Press/113938021726?hash=item1a873c3d5e:g:cZAAAOSw-d5a4215But I won't be spending $110 for it today. And if the LP reissue sets were to come out again, but with free decoder ring or something, I wouldn't spring for them again. Still, the Stereo/Mono LP was an easy buy for me (apart from the Black Friday mall struggle).
