My word, this is exciting. The DTAS tour was/were my first Replacement's shows. Saw them in Albany, NY, Kingston NY and then opening for TP at the Orange County Fair Speedway on that tour. I caught two great, sober, electric shows. Kingston was the better of the two theater shows. OCFS with TP was another story all together. You could tell Paul was seething with the overall apathy of the TP fans. He, and they, played their asses off for the Replacements fans there. I really like Tom Petty, but I honestly don't remember a single moment of their set. It was my only experience witnessing the Mat's with a bit of the drink in them.
DTAS was the first Mat's album that I was waiting for. I didn't discover them until just after the release of PTMM. From there, I worked backwards into their catalogue.....and waited for the next release. Ran to the record store on the day of release. Loved it from the first spin, even with the sheen of the production. Strong songs, great performances. I am very excited to hear the alternate/original versions...and more Tom Waits stuff (some of which I believe was buried on one of Paul's home releases, maybe 3 o'clock creep)and the U of Wisconsin show. I still have the Inconcerated vinyl and it is awesome. Damn, I'm excited.
Pun intended, Can't Hardly Wait!

For me, the decisive sentence from Rhino is this. "In total, the box includes 60 tracks–58 of which have never been heard before." store.rhino.com/dead-man-s-pop-4cd-1lp-deluxe-cassette.htmlThere is also this from Yahoo/Consequence of Sound: "Pre-orders are currently ongoing. The first 500 fans that purchase the box set through Rhino will receive a 14-track cassette featuring highlights from the box along with two additional unreleased tracks: the outtake “Asking Me Lies” and an instrumental of “I Won’t” (Bearsville Version). The cassette also features the original, unused cover art for Don’t Tell A Soul. Very cool." www.yahoo.com/entertainment/replacements-announce-box-set-dead-004755420.htmlDo I have a functioning cassette player? No. Have I preordered despite Rhino's hefty shipping fee ($10.99)? Yes.

4 CD, 1 LP? This is disappointing. All vinyl or nothing for me, thanks.

Just pre-ordered from Rhino. Almost a hundred bucks with tax and shipping.
Don't have a cassette player, not even in any of the cars. I'll find a boom box somewhere...

It will still be great to hear but was so excited by the amazon link that showed 4 discs and the format as Vinyl. Really want the studio sessions and live show on vinyl too. Vinyl records with high quality digital download - it’s the only way to go.

So what's with the title of the box set? Slim is still with us, and Bob was out of the band by then. A reference to the poker Dead Man's Hand? (two aces, two eights)

(two aces, two eights) I hear a connection to "Rock and Roll Ghost." So the "dead man" would be PW himself (who looks in the mirror and sees a rock and roll ghost).

Didn't discover them until DTAS myself (I was fourteen when it came out) and I know it isn't most people's favorite album, but it has A LOT of sentimental/nostalgia value to me. Really, really looking forward to this as well!

The Tony Berg sessions have always fascinated me, and I am super stoked about everything on this box set. Like many of you, I have been a super-fan and a collector for an embarrassing amount of years. If you would have asked me a week ago. my wishlist would have looked like this (in chronological order):
Tim Remix Tony Berg/Bearsville original DTAS release DTAS Remix Full release of "Inconcerated" recording Madison 89
In one fell swoop, they have unexpectedly addressed 3 of my 4 wishes.
I thought it was really cool when they released "Live at Maxwell's", but I have to be honest, I didn't buy it. I streamed it a bunch on Apple Music, but that recording in high quality has been circulating for people who wanted it for 30+ years. The official version sounded great, but I had heard that a thousand times by the first Clinton administration.
This Box set? Totally stoked. So much that has never been heard before. I'm still giddy/in shock that this is actually happening. And Bob Mehr's comments on social media today about it have me even more stoked about the "Redux".

Dead Man’s Pop was the proposed title for the original album Would you humor my skepticism and provide a source for that information? So far in this thread, you have asked for proof (see above) when a link to a 1988 Spin Article saying exactly what was posted in page 2 of this thread. And your original reaction to a post by the "official" Replacements social media posting a picture of tapes labeled "The Replacements" was you hoping is was Grandpa Boy.

"In addition to Matt Wallace’s mix, Redux also restores several crucial elements from the sessions, including original drums tracks, vocal takes and tempos that were altered in post-production…[and] the band’s original sequence of the album.”
This is incredible news. Original drum tracks! Different vocal takes! Different tempos!? This is so rad. Like, this is, as a 'Mats fanatic, what I pray for. I've never pre-ordered a record so fast. It'll be worth a Ben Franklin. Sure beats the asking price of the Limited Edition version of Wilco's new record: $500!
A hip-hip hooray for Bob Mehr, Rhino and the band! How much do you think Paul was involved in putting this together?
Let the speculation begin on how these songs have changed! Love this tracklist! Love how they moved "Ill Be You" up front and pushed "Anywhere's" to the back, right into "Ghost." What an ending.
LP & Disc One: Don't Tell A Soul Redux 1. “Talent Show” (Matt Wallace Mix) 2. “I’ll Be You” (Matt Wallace Mix) 3. “We’ll Inherit The Earth” (Matt Wallace Mix) 4. “Achin’ To Be” (Matt Wallace Mix) 5. “Darlin’ One” (Matt Wallace Mix) 6. “Back to Back” (Matt Wallace Mix) 7. “I Won’t” (Matt Wallace Mix) 8. “Asking Me Lies” (Matt Wallace Mix) 9. “They’re Blind” (Matt Wallace Mix) 10. “Anywhere’s Better Than Here” (Matt Wallace Mix) 11. “Rock 'N' Roll Ghost” (Matt Wallace Mix)

Also – can't wait to hear “Last Thing In The World." The pre-order page doesn't indicate (no asterisk) that the song “Dance On My Planet” is "previously unreleased," i.e. we've already heard it... Does it go by another name or something?? Hmm.

Original drum tracks! Different vocal takes! Different tempos!? This is interesting. In Wallace's interview that I linked in the previous page, he stated that he ran bass & guitar tracks through a delay to match the drums, recorded on empty tracks on the tape, and erased the original, out of time tracks. Maybe he had a safety copy of the tracks on 2" tape...

Ordered my copy! Money’s tight, we’ve got a baby on the way, but I couldn’t pass this up. Bob Mehr’s post got me super excited. Original drums, vocal takes etc. Plus the Tony Bearg sessions.... The story about Slim’s wife finding the tapes in their basement cracked up too. This is great news!

Looks like I missed a post. You'll have to understand : things usually move much, much slower around here. :-) Any insights on the meaning of the title circa its original incarnation in the late 80s? As for my original post, what I meant by "prelude" is that sometimes a Replacements release has been followed by a PW release, or vice-versa. I think the "Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?" release was right before the Open Season movie and soundtrack. Do you like Grandpaboy?

Bob Mehr produced this box set and tells the whole story behind it on this FB post. Again, I regret what I said earlier, this looks amazing and will get.
