Paul completes 49:00 on this date 07/14/2008
From Wikipedia: 49:00 (styled 49:00... Of Your Time Life) is a 2008 album by Paul Westerberg. The album was originally slated for a release on July 19, 2008 (marketed as "June 49"), but digital distribution problems delayed its release until July 21.
The album is a single track that was sold on Amazon.com's Amazon MP3 service for 49 U.S. cents. According to Westerberg's manager, Darren Hill, the 49-cent price was initially a joke suggested by Westerberg: fans would pay "a penny a minute." Hill then shopped the idea to various retailers; Amazon was the only one willing to distribute the album for the 49 cent price. The album was later listed on Tunecore for worldwide distribution, as Amazon MP3 limits purchases to customers in the United States. The long sound collage is intended to mirror the experience of tuning a radio dial, with songs abruptly cutting off and starting.
49:00 has no track listing - fans attempted to separate songs and name them. Westerberg played all of the instruments himself. The project was finished on July 14, 2008, was delivered by Westerberg to Hill on the following day; it was available via Amazon on July 21, 2008 and hit #1 on the Amazon sales chart.[3]
49:00 was deleted from TuneCore on July 29, 2008 and Amazon two days later. Westerberg has received no official explanation for the album's removal from either service.[2] Celia Hirschman of KCRW explained that the sudden removal might have been due to cease and desist notices sent to music sellers.[6] Westerberg confirmed this, saying, "Ten publishers came after us immediately 'cause I used all these snippets of songs that I recorded. It was either pay up or pull the thing."
In 2014, 49:00 and 5:05 were posted to Westerberg's Soundcloud account with the comment, "I tried to release this in 2008 and had a lot of problems. That being said I hope you enjoy it."

[/quote] its hard to listen to...I just went thru the first three songs again, and I mean, not much happening there is there? to hold up to whatever you consider PWs great songs, these are sorta pedestrian home recordings....i love 14 songs and Mono for perspective..I can even get past the sameness and drum machine of Mono for the overall good tunes....

oh it certainly was a joke but at least it was priced about right. Here we go again. I know some superfans have a soft-spot for it, and ultimately you like what you like, but it's not an easy listen. It's rambling, self-indulgent, sloppy, thrown together, incoherent, and about 45 minutes too long. There are a couple redeeming moments in there, but they're lost in the context of the whole thing. You can think it's great, but you have to admit that it's not something most people are going to gravitate to, especially from a songwriter and musician of his caliber. While I'll take anything over nothing, it's not something I've ever had a desire to revisit after the first couple listens.

I just went thru the first three songs again, and I mean, not much happening there is there? to hold up to whatever you consider PWs great songs. I love those three songs, and the rest of it too. I think the lyric of "Something in My Life is Missing" is among the best in Westerberg's whole career. Had a dollar in his pocket Tag inside his new used suit Felt like a - Davy Crocket Never learned to take orders or salute He's as thin as his checkbook But he could pass for a movie star All the while he had that wrecked look Best looking man in the whole wide bar Be my best friend - I ain't seen him in a while Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing him By a mile He writes like a Midwestern Shakespeare In a tiny perfect hand Doesn't so much as move you as breaks you(r) Fall when you decide to land Be my best friend - I ain't seen you in a while Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing him By a mile You sit there in dead silence You've got a friend who's real and true No idle conversation We roll along smokin' to the blues Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing you By a mile He paints houses for money He should get paid just to wake up Weaving magic tricks together Getting sick from drinking from the same cup Love doesn't always wear a stupid smile Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing Something in my life is missing him By a mile Something in my life is missing him By a mile

I dig it--it's not his best work, but as a concept? Yeah, I liked the stuff fading in and out, whether it was a car radio, stations fading in or out, or just what the guy hears in his head all the time. Also, this is what he had to say: It was nice for me to grab a big handful of my songs and get them out of my system. I kind of have a list. I crossed fifty songs off there. It was like, “Oh this fuckin’ blows, I don’t have to worry about those” only if you even heard one second of it, it’s like in my mind it’s done. I have to do that from time to time because I write sort of all the time.Pingback to the interview: www.paulwesterberg.com/pleased-to-meet-him-an-interview-with-paul-westerberg-nov-13-2008/

'It'll Never Die' - or whatever the hell you wanna call it - is right up their with the best of Westie.
Just perfect lyrics and delivery.
Show me something better on Mono! Not gonna happen....
-------------------------------------------------------------
I always hated how those damned abstract expressionists expected the viewer to do the work. I want my art fast food style, damn it! Production, polish, and convenience - that's what makes great rock n' roll right boys?
(your honor, he's badgering the witness)

Just perfect lyrics and delivery. this one doesnt resonate with me, I can easily think of 10-15 PW songs I would rather listen to. For me. I will say though that listening to this again makes me appreciate Chris Mars a little more

Production, polish, and convenience - that's what makes great rock n' roll right boys? missing a hook, or something that makes it catchy/memorable to the listener.... not specific to this song but your "art fast food style" comment I would note for me I dont like pitchy vocals, nor sloppy time (not swing mind you)....I dig the home demoes I've heard from All Shook Sown and Dont tell a Sould....but he doesnt seem to be trying very hard on :49, as I said before its nothing spoecial

Doesnt make it any more interesting as a listener but I understand how that would help him move on.....

The record was recorded as a trio, but I'm not aware of any Replacements shows played as a trio. They hired Slim before the PTMM tour started (apparently he did not take a percentage cut of the band). I believe the only time "they" played as a trio was years later during the Open Season film premiere, with Westerberg, Stinson, and Freese.

It was certainly just listed as Westerberg on the soundtrack, though Tommy played on 2 songs. I'm not sure how the premiere performance was billed.
