www.startribune.com/first-ever-replacements-live-album-defies-minneapolis-band-s-bad-reputation/448563483/#1 This caught my attention... "Arguably the best — or at least the leanest and meanest — tracks on “Live at Maxwell’s” are the punkier, brasher songs from the quartet’s first two releases for Minneapolis-based Twin/Tone Records, including “Johnny’s Gonna Die,” “Otto,” “Goddamn Job,” “Go” and “I’m in Trouble.” In fact, the primo quality of that early material may have been a detriment in Sire Records’ eyes. “The songs from the Twin/Tone albums sound superior, and obviously that wasn’t really a selling point to the band’s new label,” Hill said." Are they talking sound quality, performance of, or straight up the early stuff is better than stuff from Tim?

from the little I have heard, the earlier songs had been fully road-tested and hardened. They are performed with precision (if that can even apply to the Mats) and confidence. The newer material sounds like it is being worked out and not yet fully formed in a live setting.

Three years ago today - For Sale: Live at Maxwell's 1986 was released.
Tommy Stinson's birthday and my birthday as well. Maybe I'll give it another listen. Have the day off and will be putting that on next.
