This is sort of random, but I heard Nina Simone singing "Turn Me On" and the lyrics of the first part reminded me of "Don't Get Married."
TURN ME ON Like a flower waiting to bloom like a light bulb in a dark room I am sitting here waiting for you to come home and turn me on like the desert waiting for rain like a school kid waiting for spring
DON'T GET MARRIED You're like a student on vacation That's waitin' for school to resume Like a flower in the dark, Never gonna bloom
This is even more random, but the guy who wrote "Turn Me On," John D. Loudermilk, also wrote a song that Alex Chilton sang with the Box Tops, called, "Break My Mind"

Wow. What a great insight, if true that Turn Me On was Paul's inspiration.
How about a volunteer to put together a pocket card of the top 10 essential questions for Paul, in case one of us sits next to him on a plane some day? I think my brain would turn to mush, so a reference guide would be nice. :-)

I 'm not sure I'd call it an "inspiration," really, but maybe a sub-concious influence. I wrote one once that bore some musical resemblance to a song I had heard a lot but didn't particularly "like." It was only pointed out to me by one of my fellow critics that the chorus music was almost the same as Superman, but I hadn't planned it at all and was surprised to realize it was true! Then Beyonce had a big hit with "If I Was A Boy, which used the same music as the part I inadvertently had used: WHAT!? I wonder if anyone noticed that...
"I'm just a man"= "If I were a boy"= "You've got a hole" But that's where the resemblance stops. I had no knowledge of anything but MY song while writing it, and never thought once about that silly Superman song at all...I'm guessing Paul wasn't even aware of the resemblance when he was writing...I'm not so sure whoever wrote If I Was A Boy for Beyonce was as innocent, however...

If he did take inspiration from that song, he completely reversed the mood and meaning.
