I love it! Because it is Payless, he probably had to give them a BOGO deal. I expect we'll be hearing Footsteps soon!

Surprised they didn't get him to re-record Talent Show ... "In my waxed-up hair and my Payless shoes, took advantage of an offer that I couldn't refuse... "

Not sure if Mr.Rabbit is public domain or not.Did Burl Ives write it? If it's public domain and they use Pw's version, then I would think he'd get the money. If he's gonna give a song to a commercial better a cover song.

Hopefully whatever money he does make doesn't give him the financial stability to delay putting out a new album. (Ok, not really...I hope he makes good $$ on this, fans be damned!)

The ad agency responsible for the Payless ads, Martin Williams, is based in Minneapolis. And what do you know, Martin Williams' "agency broadcast producer" for this project was one Rick Fuller. pressroom.martinwilliams.com/PaylessSpring2011/

I have been needing a new pair of gym shoes... this commercial might just have worked, and I voluntarily watched the ad, not on TV ....

Is the "Waiting for Somebody" Amazon.com ad video available anywhere for comparison? What other ads have used his songs? ... some "webisodes" for something as I recall.

I'm happy for Paul but then again, all this ad revenue is just gonna keep him in the basement and not in a theatre near me. Selfish? You bet.

Even if the original 'melody' of Mr. Rabbit is public domain, PW did his own arrangement of the song, ergo, the arrangement can be copyrighted and published. He's listed with ASCAP, and the composition is listed with him as the sole composer.
And considering PW probably own the master recording as well, I'd say he did VERY good for licensing this (well, via Bug Music). And I'm not talkin just a few grand (but not talkin a milli either).
And if Laurie's getting any Payless freebies from this as well, I'd say win-win. ;-)

okay, I'll start, figuring this will be inevitable. Assemble the parade of snare drums, clown horns, kazoos and "sad trombones".....
One could consider the greater Mats oeuvre for commercials: "Can't Hardly Wait"-just SCREAMS incontinence or adult diapers. "Kick Your Door Down" - home security "Gary's Got A Boner"-Trojan Condoms. "Take Me Down To The Hospital" - Healthcare "I Bought A Headache" - any Aspirin brand "Treatment Bound" - A&E's Intervention ("Here Come's A Regular" for the other A&E show Relapse) "Little Mascara" - Cosmetics "One Wink At A Time" - those Latisse commercials with Clare Danes "Bent Out Of Shape" - Icy Hot / Ben Gay commercials "Nowhere Is My Home" - Amtrak or Greyhound

Unfortunately, this being an Easter themed ad, the royalty revenues will be shortlived. Still, every little bit helps.
