The other day I found a copy of the Left of the Dial tribute to the Replacements. I brought it up to the counter and the clerk there (a 30 something dude) instantly said "ooh, my favorite band". We chatted about the Replacements for about a minute or two before I went on my way. Having never met another Replacements fan in person, this was quite the phenomenon.

I just read this online interview with author Kevin Canty that had a Mats reference.
BY: What music you listening to these days? And while you were writing "Into The Great Wide Open?"
KC: The top of the pile in the living room: Charlie Patton, Radiohead, Jerry Douglas, Bjork, Billie Holliday, Steve Earle, Yank Rachelle's Tennessee Jug Busters and Sacred Steel Live. I play guitar myself and I gravitate toward blues, gospel, anything that doesn't feel manufactured. I was listening to a lot of Tom Petty and Rolling Stones and Replacements when I was writing the book, for obvious reasons.

Joel Dorn, an accomplished record producer and music enthusiast, once said, “As good as the music was, it always seemed better when I looked at the album (cover) while I listened.” Now, celebrate the album cover as a vehicle for photography during this exhibition, organized by the Cincinnati Art Museum. Borrowed Time: The Photograph as Music Album Cover focuses on those photographic images that have been appropriated, or borrowed, from a photographer’s existing body of work for use as album cover art. It features around forty-five photographs, along with their corresponding album or CD covers.
**The Cincinnati Art Museum has a current exhibit that features album covers. The print ad for this exhibit is running in local papers and features 4 albums, one of them being All Shook Down.

In Rob Jovanovic'c book Big Star there are a couple Replacements references: Paul's meeting with Alex that led to writing the song 'Alex Chilton,' the sessions Alex produced...I won't post the whole thing since a) it's a couple pages long and b) it probably violates some copyright law. (I will tell you it starts on page 240, though.)

When are you gonna come down When are you going to land I should have stayed on the farm I should have listened to my old man
You know you can't hold me forever I didn't sign up with you I'm not a present for your friends to open This boy's too young to be singing the blues So goodbye yellow brick road Where the dogs of society howl You can't plant me in your penthouse I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods Hunting the horny back toad Oh I've finally decided my future lies Beyond the yellow brick road
What do you think you'll do then I bet that'll shoot down your plane It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a REPLACEMENT There's plenty like me to be found Mongrels who ain't got a penny Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground

I'd love to just accidently stumble across that video being played someday, although I probably would not seek it out.. It was nominated for some sort of MTV award the year it came out...didnt win, of course. CF

Anyone care to offer me a description of the video since I haven't watched VH1 or any other music channel in years?

I was watching the new Lucero DVD today with the band's commentary on. During one scene where the band is shown preparing for a store appearence, the drummer comments "We're about to play The Ledge. (pauses) Ain't that a Cheap Trick song?". Pretty funny.

Somebody else may be able to describe it better as I have not seen it in years... I remember it as sort of an unconvential performance piece. The band is walking around the town playing acoustic instruments as Paul sings...At some point it turns into claymation, but my memory is not serving me well.. CF

Most everything but the Mats themselves is claymation. They jam on a street corner then play a gig for a rowdy clay audience. Not my favorite video, but at one point Paul flips the camera a sly FU as the boys all run by... Kinda nice to see they still had the attitude, even then.

"On this chiefly solo effort chronicling his twenties, Adams mines American Beauty and Workingman's Dead respectably, but his attempts at early-'70s Neil Young piano ballads come off as tear-stained love letters to himself, and hardly distinguish him as the guy who dropped out of high school to become Paul Westerberg." - Village Voice review of Ryan Adams
I thought it was Paul Westerberg who didn't quite finish high school in order to become Paul Westerberg.

Got a publicity mailing from a local comedy club here in Columbus. Pictures of many comedians on the card--Bobcat Goldthwait is wearing a vintage Replacements shirt in the picture.

Pictures of many comedians on the card--Bobcat Goldthwait is wearing a vintage Replacements shirt in the picture. something like the one at this page? (note that the text also has a Replacements reference (or a reference to a Replacements reference): Q. Do people still request "the voice" like it's "Freebird" or something? A. More like "Green Grass and High Times," or "Whipping Post." Or "Tim." Q. Did you just sneak in a Replacements reference? Your publicist must have done her homework. A. No. I just really liked the band. I just assume most people do. My taste vs. the rest of the world's taste is always pretty funny. (Mpls-St. Paul magazine, April 5, 2000)

I've seen that picture, too. I think that's the same one our local entertainment rag ran during his last St. Louis appearance.
He needs a new promo shot. (Plus, in that one he looks disturbingly like my ex-not-really stepdad.)
Good song that 'Tim.'
