I too am relieved for you that this person is not your friend. Maybe I'm just in a bitchy mood but he was pretty annoying and snobby.

A girl in one of my classes that I hadn't previously talked to saw my Replacements shirt and asked me to burn her Hootenanny, which is she said was the only "Mats" album she didn't have.
Pretty cool.

Is that what the young people are calling it these days?

from the Jim Walsh FilesJim Walsh's weekly (Monday) mix of 20 (or so) must-have tunes (11/14) 1. "When It Began," The Replacements. Spent the weekend writing the liner notes for the forthcoming Warners re-release of All Shook Down; can't stop playing this one, an ode to simpler selves, a swan song to a band that once was young and ready for the world, and/or a sad end to the once-limitless promise of a new love. Sure, they stole it from the Neglecters' "It's So Exciting At The Start," but who's counting?

From Like a Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan at the Crossroads by Greil Marcus:
...Other people contiunued to sing the song. In 1990, the Replacements, the Twin Cities' most confused and beloved punk band, wasted three pained minutes on the first half, with leader Paul Westerberg chewng over the words, the band tying to trash the chords, as if 'Like a Rolling Stone,' for the moment retitled 'Like a Rolling Pin,' was a great, rotting corpse, and also their true legacy, something they could no more deny than they could shed their own skin, though they had already spent years trying to do just that.

Is that what the young people are calling it these days? Nice. Burn it??!!! Sure, my copy, like so many out there, might sound a little scratchy but, hell, it took me a long time to find a copy that record! Why would anybody want to burn it? (hee hee!)

Minnesota Monthly magazine has an article on a skyway link between the new Guthrie theater building and the parking ramp being built to serve it. There is an extended intro that quotes the song etc.

I am sure this has been posted, But it was news to me......anyway, I came across this today on Juliana Hatfield site....
I grew up in a small coastal Massachusetts town. As a young girl, I was enamored of Olivia Newton-John and I saw Grease six times when it came out in theaters. But when I discovered the Replacements in high school, it was true love. With these as my two main inspirations (Replacements and Olivia Newton-John)

Ok. I like this show "Gilmore Girls" which has a lot of pop culture references. Last week's show which I just saw, had a scene where the guitarist (played by Sebastian Bach) was trying to explain the band's new song: "It's got a nice Fountains of Wayne meets The Shins crossed with Odyssey-era Zombies and a mix of early-Who and mid- to late-era Replacements vibe to it," The odd thing was I knew he was going to mention the "mats" before he did, because the song did have that kinda feel.

Sample lyric from "Spin the Bottle": "I am not afraid/I can't hardly wait." Coincidence?

Today i was at a local record store (san diego) and asked to use their bathroom. There was a grandpaboy dead man shake poster in there. I went and tried to sweet talk the owner into giving it to me, but he was a huge 'mats fan. He saw them here on the let it be tour. Bastard.

The Guardian newspaper in the UK is giving away classic must-have (i.e. old) albums away if you collect enough mastheads.
This weeks is REM's Reckoning - on the page with the relevant voucher is a family tree/mind map of related acts.... in a sort of Pete Frame way. The Mats appear linking "jangle pop" to PW through to 'singles' which in turn links to pearl jam and in turn to "grunge".
It's way too large to scan but made me smile.
