Peter J, in today's MPLS Strib:
The Twin Cities has a history of nationally renowned indie labels, including Soma, which helped make the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird" a national hit in the 1960s, and the influential '80s-'90s rock labels Twin/Tone and Amphetamine Reptile. Rhymesayers might already have surpassed its hometown predecessors. Atmosphere's last CD, "Seven's Travels," sold about 154,000 copies, according to Nielsen/SoundScan. That number "was unheard of in our heyday," said Twin/Tone Records co-founder Peter Jesperson. "The indie movement had only just begun." Best Buy featured the Atmosphere CD in its weekly color insert distributed Sunday in newspapers across the country. Target also has taken out print ads promoting the album. "I think it has to be an advantage to have champions of local music within those organizations," Jesperson said, pointing to Target commercials using music by local acts the Suicide Commandos and Suburbs.

I mountain bike, and blew out a tire on Sunday. I was in the bike store and 'Left of the Dial' came on over the loud speakers. One of the workers has some taste!

In today's local paper in the "Today's Birthday's" paragraph Tommy Stinson is listed as being 39... I glance at this section every day and this is the first year Tommy has been acknowledged. He must have some new fans.

There's a one sentence nod to the Replacements in this month's Spin's feature on the history of indie rock. Maybe someone who buys Spin would like to transcribe it? Couldn't take more than a few seconds.
(Cute photo included. Almost made me buy the magazine. Almost.)

A recent issue of CMJ listed the top 25 college rock bands of all time in terms of influence. The Replacements made it at number 23. They were credited with pioneering the whole "wearing your heart on your sleeve" thing, making it OK in indie rock.
For those curious, the list went:
01.R.E.M. 02.Nirvana 03.Sonic Youth 04.Pixies 05.Public Enemy 06.Pavement 07.The Smiths 08.Violent Femmes 09.They Might Be Giants 10.Slayer 11.Black Flag 12.New Order 13.Jane's Addiction 14.U2 15.De La Soul 16.Aphex Twin 17.Uncle Tupelo 18.Fugazi 19.Mike Watt 20.Bikini Kill 21.Husker Du 22.Ani DiFranco 23.The Replacements 24.Radiohead 25.Superchunk
Make of that what you will. Personally, I would've swapped They Might Be Giants with the Mats, making them number nine instead.

This wasn't actually a sighting, but it reminded me of them. I was surfing the web this weekend for info about knee replacement surgery (my Dad is having one this week). One of the sites had a banner that screamed...
HOW MANY REPLACEMENTS HAVE YOU HAD?
I just thought wow, that's a little personal.

I was at a black rebel motorcycle club show here in San Diego. There was a kid wearing a let it be era replacements shirt. I was speechless. He said he bought it at a thrift store for 15 bucks. Bastard

I have a Let It Be shirt that I got from Color Me Impressed dot com.
I wore it on Friday, and a teacher was like, "GREAT album!" He asked me a bunch of questions, like how did I get into them and how old was I. He said, "I was 16 when that album came out! BIG album!" I've heard he has a Paul Westerberg poster in his room.

went shopping for snow boots and coats for the kids today at the 'Valu Thrift Store' (a huge secondhand store in the neighborhood).
Couldn't tell if it was a radio station or what they were playing over the loudspeakers, but following Sarah McLachlan's Angel was the Mats Here Comes A Regular.
it seemed kinda fitting, since I will be doing alot of shopping at the thrift store now.

From www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/10.12.05/solo-0541.htmlJury's Out Quick! Name one hit song that Natalie Merchant had after 10,000 Maniacs! Though she isn't quite banging the charts, she's made more records solo (including a best of compilation out this week) than with 10,000 Maniacs and she tours the lucrative winery circuit. This middle ground between anonymity and preaching to the converted is inhabited by many. Lauryn Hill is batting .500 with a great solo debut but dreadful acoustic album. She cut her losses and reformed with the Fugees recently. Pete Doherty is making more noise now with Babyshambles (and links to Kate Moss and narcotics consumption) than he ever did with the Libertines. Bobby Brown and New Edition have hit and missed to varying degrees. Erasure's Andy Bell releases a solo album this month to little fanfare. Phil Collins had a respectable solo career going but seriously messed with his legacy by cutting all these weak sauce Disney soundtracks. Diana Ross, Beyoncé, Trey Anastasio, Kool Keith, Mos Def, Paul Westerberg, Glenn Danzig, Tommy Lee are others walking the tightrope between hot tracks and cold pizza.

Mpls-St. Paul magazine (or was it the Strib?) has a little item about Chris Mars's art, where they egg him on to move on from the grotesquerie already.
