Fooling around with a couple of songs last night, I realized that, pared down to their essense, the songs "Axis Bold As Love" (Hendrix) and "Another Girl, Another Planet" can both be played using the same basic chord pattern: D / A / Bm / A / G / A (with differences in choruses etc.)
This confirms two theries I've heard about guitar playing and songs:
1) Most of the great songs are built around fairly simple chord structures and
2) There are subtle intricacies that make these songs different from each other and from lesser songs (and these subtlties can be both mysterious and nearly impossible to master by basic players such as myself, although they can be compensated for to some degree- maybe even a lot- by throwing in extra feeling or intensity... umph!!... depending on the song).
Which also reminds me of something a friend once told me- there is an almost infinite number of ways to play a song and not necessarily a "right" one if it comes from somewhere inside yourself.
