Ok.. this song was fairly easy to transpose....but, what does it mean?
Something in My Life is Missing
Had a dollar in his pocket. Tag inside his new used suit. Felt like a - Davy Crockett. Never learned to take orders or salute.
He’s as thin as his checkbook. But, he could pass for a movie star. All the while he had that wreck look. Best looking man in the whole wide bar.
He’s my best friend -- I ain’t seen him in awhile.
Something in my life is missing. Something in my life is missing. Something in my life is missing him. By a mile.
He writes like a Mid-Western Shakespeare. In a tiny perfect hand. It doesn’t so much as move you as breaks your Fall, when you decide to land.
He’s my best friend -- I ain’t seen him in awhile.
Something in my life is missing. Something in my life is missing. Something in my life is missing him. By a mile.
Sit there in dead silence You got a friend who is real and true. No idle conversation. We roll along smoking until we’re blue.
Something in my life is missing. Something in my life is missing. Something in my life is missing him. By a mile.
Paints houses for money He should be paid just to wake up. We do magic tricks together. And get sick from drinking from the same cup.
Love doesn’t always – wear a stupid smile.
Something in my life is missing., etc.

Singing about a younger version of himself maybe?

I thought the same but the painting houses line throws me. Up until he says "He's my best friend" he's perfectly describing Townes Van Zandt. I'm thinking it's about a writer friend. Wether it's songs he writes I don't know.

It changes daily, but this one is arguably my favorite on the record...at least for this morning!

I felt like each verse was about a different friend. I thought I saw posted on this board that someone thought the first verse was about Tommy...

some THING, not some ONE. If the thing is friendship or a band or "gang"it is likely about multiple people. 4 verses.....tommy (good looking), paul (writer), bob (loyal buddy) and chris (painter)in that order?

Now I think he's singing about himself on this one.

This is still my favorite on 49:00.
I agree with the above posters, the song is not necessarily about one person, could be about former bandmates, and is definitely about himself.
The chorus in particular is genius and says at least three different things:
something in my life is missing something in my life is missing him by a mile

Yeah, genius song and part of me wishes the album would be sectioned off so I could listen to it easily.

Could be about Dad, too. While I don't know the history as well as some, 'love doesn't always wear a stupid smile' sounds like a line referring to a tumultuous family relationship.

The more I listen to it, the more I think he's talking about himself. And I've thought this all along, so what I'm saying is that I'm really confident about it now (while acknowledging that I don't have any more data than everybody else).

There's also a line about "getting sick drinking from the same cup" (I'm paraphrasing). This happens to kids in a large family (like Paul's). Possibly an older brother? Or maybe each of his own family members he's describing? As we get older we often lose touch with our family for whatever reasons.

has anyone chopped this song off as a standalone? if so, would you be willing to send it to me? (i've bought all the online stuff, just have no time to research audio-chopping software.) it's by far the best thing on 49, and i would love to replay it over and over as a "single."
i still think the lyrics are at least partially about boquist!

The first three songs on 49, in particular, stand among Paul's best songs. It's a staggeringly strong start to an album and they flow into one another perfectly.

I like how this songs sort of ties into the recent PW interview that is mentioned elsewhere by the guitar hero company. In it he mentions that something "is missing" when he and Tommy got together to play and that something, to my ears, was another person or personality that would make it feel more like a "band" instead of a PW-TS show. I gotta still think there is a connection.
