I rarely, if ever, hear "Favorite Thing" listed among the Mats best or most talked about songs. Granted, it tends to get lost among so many great songs on Let It Be, but the nod (at least in print) always goes to "I Will Dare", "Unsatisfied", "Answering Machine", and even "Androgynous" (rightfully so - all great songs). Maybe I just hear something others don't - but I absolutely love Favorite Thing...so much raw emotion, and to me, it is the one song that perfectly blends the rawness and power, and energy of their ealier work, combined with the "tenderness" and "ache" (as PW likes to say) of their later stuff and his solo efforts.
Any thoughts?
Agree/disagree?

If Only You Were Lonely! Easily my favorite early song lyrically.

I like Favorite Thing a lot, but I personally wouldn't put it in the same class as the songs you mention. It's a good rocker that contributes to the overall smart-sloppy-stupid-sensitive feel of LIB that makes it such a classic... but IMO it's not one of the songs that defines the album.

Bob Mould's band SUGAR had a great song on their second album named "Favorite Thing". They are both good songs but sound nothing alike.
I've also always wanted to know who "Donna" is/was and if Paul is referring to her again in "Pool & Dive".
Personally I think "Nevermind" is the most underrated Mats tune.

I'm so glad someone else has a big appreciation for Favorite Thing. It comes close to being my favorite Mat's song all time. Dare I say, also my favorite song on Let it Be. The guitars and lyric/vocal delivery is incredible. There is a really good live version on...live at the Ritz I think? Paul improvises the first verse magically.

100% right.
The crazy yell at the beginning, the pell mell melody, the pace that almost falls apart...a perfect punk pop tune.
i also feel that 'we're comin' out' is sadly underdiscussed as a highlight. the finger snaps? the piano? in the midst of the hardcore onslaught? awesome.

Totally agree. In fact, I think it might be my favorite song on LIB.

Yeah, I really liked this one a lot before I ever came around to liking Unsatisfied. I thought the finger snaps and piano was the coolest shit I ever heard. And NOBODY talks about this song. I have a lot of bootlegs and the only time they play it live is on the Lingerie, LA show in 1984. Favorite Thing is really great too. Lots of energy. Tommy Tonsils is ANOTHER overlooked jem in my book.

Favorite Thing is fantastic.
Take Me Down to the Hospital at the time was another favorite.

Fav Thing....love it!
Pay close attention from the 1:30 mark to about 1:34. It's one of those perfect rock n roll moments.......it's sounds like the whole thing is about to fall apart, yet it doesn't. It's magic.
We're comin out sounds 100% better ir you hear it after Favorite Thing. Like PB&J. Gotta go together.

The snaps and piano bit kills me every time. Fuckin' love it. I think young punk kids of today need to listen to those two songs. Actually, they should just listen to the entire Mat's catalogue.

Put me down as another big fan of "Favorite Thing."
To go in a wholly other direction for a minute, I was listening to the Rhino Best Of... today in the car, and it occurred to me that, while "Message to the Boys" might just be a tossed off ditty in the world of Westerberg, it also kicks the living s**t out of anything the Stones have recorded for the past twenty-five years. There is just no justice in the world of popular entertainment.

I actually really liked Voodoo Lounge and I bought the single Streets of Love off of their newest album.

I would have placed Favorite Thing on the Best Of record in place of Answering Machine. It would have added a little more punch to the middle part of the album.
