My quick first reaction: Wow! It was great to hear Paul talk about such a wide variety of topics and with such apparent honesty. I really enjoyed the discussion of the various producers and how they affected so many of the albums (primarily those on major labels). I was left wanting a few more tunes from Mr. Westerberg even though I went in expecting a limited number. Also, the interviewer, Warren Zanes (of the Del Fuegos who is working for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and doing the Craft series) did at times do more talking that I would have liked. On the plus side, he did bring some unique history to the program (for example as a member of the Del Fuegos he slept on the floor at the Stinson house at one point) but I would have liked to have heard more from Paul and less from him.
Others I am sure will comment on the music played as they will likely have much better memories or notes than I do. In any case the music ranged from new (one called Everyone is Stupid or something similar) to titles from his solo albums some 'Mats songs and a few surprises (can't recall the name but a song he wrote for the 'Mats but never recorded because it was too "spiritual" but clearly influenced other Replacements tunes). The crowd was unusually restrained. I suppose since Mr. Zanes asked in the pre-show the audience to minimize the shouting and requests since the show was being recorded for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, it seemed really, really strange to see chairs set up on the main dance floor/pit at First Ave with waitresses taking orders and delivering drinks. For some reason that just did not seem right.
All in all a great evening - frankly more 60 minutes than Austin City Limits - and thanks to Miller for including 2 free beers with admission as well as a Tshirt - not bad considering my tickets were free!

Did the audience have a chance to ask any questions or were the questions strictly coming from Warren Zanes?

a few surprises (can't recall the name but a song he wrote for the 'Mats but never recorded because it was too "spiritual" but clearly influenced other Replacements tunes I think he said it was called "Make the Best of Me." It had lines that he recycled in later solo songs (someone help me here) and maybe because of the title reminded me of the Mats studio outtake "Make This Your Home."

Stuck inside the MPLLS airport, with the Boston blues....
I'm on a lousy keybooaarded internet kiosk in the MPLS airport @ 7:05pm. My flight was scheduled to leave @ 6:45pm but there was some kind of apocolypitic thunderstrom and now we're allegedly leaving at 9:;30pm but they keep moving it back so who knnows? Lost my parking ticket so lord knows whhat I'll becharged to get ny car out of parking at Logan. ANDD I'm missing HEROES!!
But it was all worth it (so far) for last night's show. I loved the interview part, that could have gone on for another 2 hours and I'd have been happy. Sure I would have loved for him to play 10 songs to close out the show but I enjoyed every minute of it. Ii was hoping/loobbbying for "What A Day (for a Night) and so that was a high point for me but agree with Chris R from the StarTrib that Paul kicked major ass on "world Class Fad".
More when/if I ever a) get home abd b) get my car
sorry for the bad spelling/typing

Not a review, but since Demps mentioned "Everyone's Stupid" here, I thought I'd mention.... When Paul talked Sunday night about "Everyone's Stupid" I remembered having read somewhere along the line that he'd written that for Open Season, but it didn't get used for the soundtrack. Thanks to the wonder of google, I found that reference: “I thought I was making a rock ’n’ roll soundtrack, and in the end they have the London Philharmonic and all this lush orchestration in certain places,” he says. “It was never sold to me like that, but I knew it was coming. They also had me recut songs that I liked. I did one song for this scene in a minimart. They made me rewrite it five times. And in the end they didn’t use any of it; they used some other band’s song instead. I also did this song called ‘Everyone’s Stupid,’ which I thought was really good, but it got cut because it frightened one of the producer’s children. For a guy who doesn’t take advice very well, I wasn’t used to dealing with stuff like that.” Link [/color] to the harpmagazine.com article.

had a great time. loved to hear paul play. reminded me of the guthrie shows mixed in with a little fakebook. pros: "world class fad". a bluesy reading of it, and i loved every second of it. "wad(fan)". different without the electric guitar, but still fantastic. his explanation of why he has to do certain things in order to do the things he wants to do. priceless paul. when someone right away yelled "can't hardly wait" (nevermind, was that you?), he smiled, and said, "later..." cons: TOO QUIET warren zanes mildly sucked. as i described it during the event, while paul was being interviewed, i was conscious of the fact that questions were being asked, and answers were being offered, but the MOMENT paul went to play a song, or after i left i COMPLETELY forgot about the q & a. that might be a function of the fact that the talking volume was entirely too low, but i tend to think it was largely due to the fact that the interviewer was not engaging enough. the beer selection was lacking i mean, i appreciate free as much as the next guy, but come on.

somewhere, someone mentioned that he played his first act, and i think i just used it once, yes? during the opener, let the bad times roll? i that was it.
ever since the pantages shows, my favorite guitar was his 12 string strat, and after sunday's thing i am more convinced than ever of this matter.

This is my first post here, so to be posting a review of the Craft show is a doozy. Bear with me.
Thought the show was wonderful but, like others, thought there could (and maybe should) have been "a little less conversation and a little more action." Warren Zanes definitely enjoyed (ahem) his role in the spotlight, but it was good to see him get to be the master of ceremonies to one of his self-professed idols. Since Paul performed more songs than the other Craft featured artists have thus far it's hard to complain.
As for the song selection - well, I'm not going to argue with Paul's choices. Highlights for me were the opener, "Let the Bad Times Roll," "It's a Wonderful Lie," the gritty version of "World Class Fad" (that rocked every bit as much as the original though in a different, "bluesy-er" way) and "Dyslexic Heart." Dyslexic Heart holds a special place for my wife and me since we chose that song for our first dance at our wedding almost 14 years ago. "Can't Hardly Wait" and "Skyway" were great to close out the show too.
I was a little bit surprised at the bluntness of Paul's criticism of Chris. Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part but I thought that if Paul had patched things up enough to do the two new songs with Chris he'd have let it go.
Was anyone else as (pleasantly) surprised as me that "ABC" made it onto the favorite 4 songs portion? Actually THERE is another highlight - Paul grabbing the guitar and spontaneously banging out "ABC" right off the cuff. Where else would you have ever seen that?

Welcome to the board!
I didn't see that in any of the reviews. About his playing?

I read that he said they overdubbed Chris' kick-drum on the PTMM album, and that's why it sounded so good. He said, "Chris was great on the snare and hi-hats....."

Not exactly. He said that Chris's kick drum was sampled on PTTM and that it each time you hear it on the recording it's someone (presumably not Chris) pushing a button. The "Chris could play the hell out of the snare and high-hat" came right after that line and (the way I heard it) made Paul's original sampling comment seem even worse - damning by scant praise. I think Paul may have realized he sounded a little harsh because he also said that some of his guitars were overdubbed or sampled. Still, the whole exchange took me a little by surprise - definitely a sign of the "apparent honesty" previously mentioned. Maybe it's a mistake to read too much into it, though.

I agree with you on "World Class Fad", I've never been a huge fan of the song but that version of it was a knockout. Also, I agree with you on "wad(fan)", after spending a few minutes going what the hell is "wad(fan)". I was thrilled that he played that. That song is lovely. I wish I could think up some complaints, but I'm still in that "so happy to have gone" mode that I don't have any. I mean, other than the obvious, I wish Paul had ended the show with 10 songs instead of 4. It seems like, here's a club full of fans, Paul's (seemingly) in good spirits, sounding great, everything is set up, so why not play another 20 minutes, what in the world could be the down side to doing that? Paul could still be having issues with his hand in which case I totally understand but outside of that, I wonder why not make the most of the rare occurance of Paul playing live since everything was already in place. Oh one more thing, at the time, I was like, why is Warren Zanes giving us a looooong intro on the history and importance of PW and the Mats...if there's any group of people in the world who don't need to be told this, it would the 500 people who managed to make their way into First Ave on Sunday night - we clearly get it! I realized later that part was obviously for the benefit of those viewing the show later who might not be as well-versed in PW.

That wasn't me scooteR, I was too busy yelling 'Freebird'. Actually I was very quiet, as was everyone, trying to hear the questions being asked. ‘World Class’ rocked and it was great to hear him play ‘Lush and Green’, one of my favorites. One of the highlights for me was hearing him play 2 songs I’ve never heard before. It’s always exciting to hear a new song from Paul. Thanks Kathy for getting everyone together before and after the show, it was great to meet everyone.

"world class fad". a bluesy reading of it, and i loved every second of it. I agree with you on "World Class Fad", I've never been a huge fan of the song but that version of it was a knockout. I used to love the original World Class Fad blindly. Now PW's Craft solo version, combined with Kathy's comment, has spoiled that for me -- in a good way! Just the idea that it is possible to like anything better, along with the existence of something better (PW's new reading) to like, has altered the very structure of the universe for me as defined by the song "World Class Fad."
