I got a chance to speak to Kevin before the first LA show, in a bar across the street from the venue. He was polite and engaging. He is a family man, a business man, a music man.
That night, I got the impression there wasn't a single thing on earth he'd rather be doing than being on the road playing guitar with Paul Westerberg.
Thanks PW, Kevin, Jim and Michael. What a ride...

man, i take a few days off the board, and this is what i find! kevin, if you weren't a dude, i'd marry you.
i had a nice time talking with you about st. louis park with the aussies outside the bus in memphis.
jim, it was nice speaking with you, too.
michael, never had a chance to speak with you, but from all accounts, you are a fantastic fellow.
paul, i could never meet you. not because of anything negative. i just don't think it would be a good idea. your music has meant to world to me, and seeing this band with you has been a true rock & roll experience.
glad for the 3 shows i saw. still wish i could've done more.
all the best paul & his only friends.

What? That's not legal in Minnesota? That's right, a dude can have only one husband.

Kevin,
Reading your remarks was inspiring and probably put alot of what other people feel about it into words as well...
The thing that crossed my mind was...
It seems to me that perhaps you feel you were up there playing "pauls songs" and technically...you were...
As i watched 4 shows this tour, I did not once think this is a Paul Westerberg show with a backing band...
You guys made those songs as much yours as they are pauls and THAT was what was truly inspiring. An absolute incredible band and i take my hat off to you guys as much as paul...an incredible 4 man unit all in it together playing your hearts, having a blast and kicking some ass at the same time.
Hope to see you 4 on stage in the future...
so THANK YOU

Well said, HBJ. That also struck me as well, that HOFs really made those songs come alive. It seems as if all the people who were luke warm about some songs off of Folker really started digging it once they heard it live. So, a big thanks goes out to HOFs for adding depth and color to those songs. I gotta think that Paul was really happy too with how the band enhanced the songs with incredible energy and drive. Especially with Michael B's incredible drumming and timing.

I was not as fortunate as some (Meri) to see 4 shows, but I saw Memphis and I saw Louisville and I can't hardly wait to see another tour w/ PW and HOF...(BTW, I think you may have a few million more friends than you know, Paul)

I'm nearly rested, and my credit card is on ice, cooling off. Ready and waiting for any future dates that get scheduled, anywhere / anytime! Thanks, Kevin for the note....and of course to MichaelB for the on-going input here at the MWTbb. Very cool. ~~Meri, still kicking myself over the bracelet thing in Orlando ...and therefore refusing to take off the HoB wrist band.

I hope that Kevin's post is followed up by him reading our replies! What a complete show of class and appreciation!
My wife and I stumbled into Kevin in the parking lot after the Detroit show. Neither of us are meet and greet types but my wife simply said "nice show" to Kevin. What followed was one of the kindest offerings about Paul and the tour....etc. It was short and sweet but we could tell that the guys were genuinely having a good time.
Thanks to HOF for the class act they are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin Bowe (aka "Bone") asked me to post this message to everyone: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In my not-that-humble opinion he's never written a better song than "As Far As I Know", that one was my favorite to play every night. I heard Peter Jesperson on the radio in LA a few months ago, and he also called "As Far As I Know" the best song Paul's done since the Replacements.

Jesperson hears alot of music, so his opinion definately has merit.. But, I'd be curious to understand how "As Far As I Know" has come to be regarded so highly.. I can think of four or five post-Mats songs that I like better. CF

Sure AFAIK rocks live & there's no doubt MB plays the shit outta this tune, but it's always been too sugary for my taste. I'll take "Knockin on Mine" or World Class Fade" over AFAIK anyday.

So cool of Kevin to send us all this message! When I briefly spoke with Kevin after the S.F. show he told me he like the screwing around on stage stuff but what he really liked the most was (thumping his chest over his heart), "playing from here". And that's where we heard from, Kevin. Thanks!

brianlux,
i got into an argument on another board with someone who just didn't get the emotional factor (I was basically defending Paul's style of play). He was all about technical expertise and blah blah blah. Man, I'll take something coming from someone's heart, with honesty, over some sterile play-by-the-numbers-sound-exactly-like-the record crap anyday.

I was just reading the Stereo/Mono notes again tonight and was thinking how many artists do you know let it all hang out like he does? "This is my blood" - PW on Mono, "Unprofessional? Perhaps. Real? Unquestionalably" - PW on Stereo For me, these statements define both the 'Mats, PW, and PW and HOF and the reason I will never tire of their music.

pline, funny you mentioned that quote because that's what this idiot argued with me about! he went on about, 'how can he call himself a musician if he doesn't care about how it sounds' blah blah blah... the guy just doesn't get it. i hope i never have to be next to him or anyone like him at the next concerts i go to.
