Well, I was there Friday night deep in the heart of Buckhead, prepared to dodge drive-by's, but alas there was no violence at hand. Instead, what I got was the best solo show I've seen Westerberg do since The Mats broke up. And thank you, God---it was a ROCK show! A couple of acoustic numbers which are always good, but I was hoping when I heard the news he would be on the road with a band meant that I would see Paul Westerberg-Rocker! And I wasn't disappointed. And damn if he didn't look like he was having fun again. The last tour, he was so tensed up he went into the crowd after a heckler. This time, he and the band were relaxed and kickin it old school. There was a girl standing next to me on the floor in light blue Converse All-Stars, (nice choice!) who pogoed all night long and actually knew the words to the songs. She was fun. And MY date had never heard of Westerberg before. I'm pleased to report that the next day she headed out to the record store to get everything they had by Paul and The Mats. Another day, another convert....  |
