The Boston show was very very good -- a couple of little lulls but it kicked in to over drive at the end. Awesome cover of "Borstal Breakout".
I'm very a) tired and b)still freaking cold so not a lot of details forthcoming tonight. IOU rocked, "Stain Yer Blood" is awesome.
"Crackle & Drag" was a hoot, Paul lost the words in his head and someone jumped on stage to help him and ended up confusing him more (though he meant very well).
Met Paulie and Landshark and PWIG (who had a great spot up front). and lots of lurkers - hi lurkers!
Fun fun fun fun show.

incredible. the show kicked ass. Pauls voice is amazing. Michael Bland plays is the best drummer out there. period. if anything too much professionalism. not a trainwreck in sight. i'm bad on details so i'm gonna leave that to sharper minds.

THAT was a religious experience. Got there early and got a spot at the stage. Met Kathy and FreeRider and got a great live disc from someone from another website. When I have more time I'll tell the stories from the front of the stage but the show was great. Band is very tight - Bland is a monster drummer in every sense of the word. Paul looked conservative (if that's possible) in a pinstripe jacket and white pants but he stripped down (hey now!) to just white shirt and pants for most of the show. Stain Yer Blood was great though I couldn't hear his vocals for most of the show (it's okay, I know the words.) He seemed not too happy with the technical side of it and kept playing with his mic and monitors.
Couldn't someone who actually KNEW the words to Crackle and Drag have jumped up there to help? I don't know them well enought to do it but I could see others in the crowd that did. I didn't write down a setlist but it seemed like he was on tour to support "Pleased To Meet Me" by playing:
IOU Valentine Nevermind Alex Chilton Can't Hardly Wait
Left of the Dial was great and they really rocked out Merry Go Round. Knockin On Mine (possibly my favorite solo song) kicked ass.
It was a great show. I will tell the story from the front of the stage some time because it was full of laughs and drama.

My first time seein' him Kick ass show tight but kinda loose I'd say. I was front and center right up against the stage and I think my photos give Ms. Catherine a run for her money. I'm trying to send them to Kathy, but damn Gmail keeps flipping out. Anywhoot cool to see Paul play drums in the middle of Can't Hardly Wait. Suprised to hear him play I Will Dare, Nevermind, and IOU, and I was trying to help him out on Crackle and Drag, but even I was probably messing him up. Very cool guy to meet he was rockin out to Sticky Fingers on the bus. Still on cloud 9...

Great show, much fun. Very happy to meet Kathy and sorry not to make the pre-show festivities and meet more of you guys -- three-hour drive in from Western Mass., and as Kathy warned, much Red Sox traffic. Once we ditched the car, it was all kind of fun -- Paul on one side of the street, the Green Monster on the other.
I'd second the raves about Paul's voice on the rockers. Amazing, and I can't believe he could do that three nights in a row. He was a little bedraggled on a couple of the subtler songs -- "Anyways All Right" was a little weak, which was a mild disappointment since the insertion of the "dog whose broken from the leash" into AAA was really strong. I was also disappointed that "How Can You LIke Him," didn't gain in power and majesty on stage. It's a great song though, and I'm glad he sang it.
On the other hand, I thought the emotional highlight of the show was "Now I Wonder" -- wow, the passion he put into it blew me away, and it really packed a punch. "Bad Times Roll" a close second in this department.
Stain Yer Blood, Gunshy, something he called "Nosferatu Blues" by Billie Joe Shaver (is that an actual person, or is it another PW alter ego) were all fantastic.
Valentine, Little Mascara were both home runs (though wasn't he offkey on the Mascara choruses?), along with "Borstal Breakout" (I've never heard that before.) Knockin on Mine was terrific and maybe the rockingest song of all was "Making Me Go" -- love that riff, and the way he played it with a cigarette in hand.
The "Crackle and Drag" bit was really interesting -- my wife thought it was brilliant (and intentional), using this unbelievably intense and dark and sad song almost as comic relief -- I mean, when he laughs as he sings "zipping her up in a bag" there's an incredible disjunction.
Must admit I got a bit antsy after "Crackle and Drag" -- the energy flagged and I started thinking about that long drive home. It's heresy I know, but my age I'm ready to go home after 90-100 minutes.
I know he seemed cranky about the vocals, but from where we were on the side about 1/3 of the way back the vocals came through just fine.
Finally, Kathy, a big thank you. This site and board makes the whole PW fan-thang so much richer. We all owe you big time!
P.S. Paul ragged the Boston homies a little near the end, saying he had to check the Yankees score. I'm a Yankee fan, but it occurred to me on the way home that our collective devotion to PW makes us kind of like Red Sox fans -- he usually finds a way to shoot himself in the foot, but there's lots of good times along the way, and someday, some way, things may break right for him and he'll get everything he deserves.

Hi all,
a lot to absorb, as I just got back home to DC. Indeed, I met pwig and his friend who I guess doesn't post on the board, as he said, "I'm nobody". I laughed and said, Nobody? that's a Westerberg song!
I was standing behind pwig and Catherine Carter, rock chick-photographer and the whole security thing was a big distraction. They confiscated the film from this short guy to my right. And yeah, I hope someone got a shot of Paul on the drums. Michael B switched over to bass, which he played lefthanded (ie, the bass was upside down if you're a righty), Jim took the lead vocals and guitar. It looked like Paul was having a blast doing that, sitting behind Michael B's drum kit and all.
The show was tight, not a lot of tom-foolery. But man, did they tear right thru "IOU"....I swear, the volume got louder towards the end of the nite. As noted, Paul had problems with his monitors, he couldn't hear and turned his monitors aroudn facing the audience. He said, "Maybe YOU can hear the vocals." Also, when they came out for the encore, Kevin said in his mic to the PA guys, "the monitors are turned off", and Paul said off microphone, "welcome to my world!"
I was running around earlier to meet with some other people and didn't get a chance to find landshark or Placemat to say hi. Well, maybe next time...

Oh yeah, this was a bit strange. I think it was during "what a day for nite" that Michael B counted down and Kevin missed his opening guitar riff. They all stopped and Michael B laughed. both he and Paul said something to Kevin, smiling, and pointing at Kevin. Anyway, once they got into the song, at one point, Paul pursed his lips and walked over to Kevin----and they kissed on the lips! Then Kevin made a face and started purposely playing out of tune to show the ill effects of that kiss. A little strange, but funny....

Just got back from Boston and can die a happy man. The show was incredible. Sorry I didn't get to meet anyone. I was staying in Manchester, NH with my uncle in a frickin mansion, but no computer so I didn't get Kathys warning about the parking, which cost us. Paulie, if I'd have seen your post I'd have hunted you down. You could have been my best man at my wedding to the chick who was next to me. I was talking to her before the show, just idle talk about what songs we hoped he'd play. "When Left of the Dial started she just threw her arms around me and gave me a bear hug. It occured to me after the show, that though I knew nothing about her, not even her name, she loved Left of the Dial and that was all I needed to know. She must become my bride. Alas, the show ended and we were two ships passing in the night. Seriously though, the show was unbelievable. I know I see Paul through rose-colored glasses and anything he would have done I'd have been happy with, but he played almost all of my favorites. I swear I was so pumped after the show I felt like a soccer hooligan. I wanted to overturn police cars and set them on fire. I wanted Wolfdog to appear with guitar and I'd I'd have sang(horribly off-key) all night. I haven't slept for an epoch. And I got to the ocean. Word of advice to other landlubbers: Do not jump into the Atlantic Ocean in April. It is cold. I froze my ass off. But it had to be done.

I just remembered this...did anyone notice the picture stuck on top of Michael B's bass drum? It looked like an old black and white photo of someone playing the piano. Does anyone have any info on that pic?

That's what I get for for not standing up front, I miss the good stuff.

At first, I thought it might have been Jerry Lee Lewis or something, but I just couldn't make it out.

Was that a souvenir from Sun Studios? No, I had some Elvis stuff prior to that, I'm pretty keen on him. Although it really didn't interest me to go into graceland when we were in memphis. But I loved going to Sun Studios, that was awesome.
