As some people pointed out on the Chicago thread, Jim Derogatis sometimes seems to talk out of both sides of his mouth... I can see how a good many people were put off by that show, but I was bewildered when I read Jim's specific criticisms. I usually prefer Greg Kot, the Chicago Tribune's rock critic -- he tends to be more cogent. He reviewed the show, too, and he generally dug it. Since I didn't see a link to his review on these boards, here it is: www.chicagotribune.com/features/chi-0504180149apr18,1,7355820.story?ctrack=1&cset=true Greg and Jim also host a rock talkshow called Sound Opinions on WXRT here in Chicago, and they discussed the show for about 15 minutes. There's a Real Audio file of it at: www.soundopinions.net/realaudio/Apr05/041905a.ram(Skip ahead to the 7:40 mark.)

Thanks for posting the link to the radio show! I think I now hate Derogatis more than I did after reading the print review. Referring to PW's last three albums he says "He's just been making noise in his basement." He very obviously hates everything PW has done since...well, since the Replacements at least because he also hates the three 90's albums. Why let someone who hate the last 14 years of a performers output review anything done by them? Why would he want to? Just so he can make digs at the artist in public?
The second caller mentioned this site though, which was pretty cool. Hi whoever you are!

Funny, I always thought basements were the best place for rockers to make noise... To quote Neil Diamond, it's a beautiful noise.

I think the other guy had it pegged, that mr poopy pants is just pissed that all of his 80s "icons" didn't stay in the 80s and continue to make Chronic Town and Let it Be. He also asked what it would actually take to make him happy with the show. I figured that guy must have read Monkey's post

Those who can do - do, Those who can't - teach, Those who can't teach - are critics.

Those who can do - do, Those who can't - teach, Those who can't teach - are critics. Hell, that fits most of us on this board But at least we don't get paid for it. I thought a bit more about this, and recalled reading whatshisname's bio on Lester Bangs, and knowing of Lester's love-hate deal with Lou Reed. I wonder of DeRogatis views PW as his own personal foil.

Man I tell you, Derogatis is a complete jackass...he basically has no argument...i mean, what is the point of even talking about a subject when you merely have off handed sarcastic comments....he thinks this band sucks...where has he been, good god...ands i have had it with people saying "well i saw him back in '84.." if i had a wood nickel for everytime someone has based an irrational argument on that premise, man i would have a whole lotta dead wood....i dont agree with kot a whole lot either, but hell at least he takes the time to fomulate some argument, not just dumb as rant form sittin in the VIP seats...i am sure he woulda hated the detroit show too, cause you know...he could....and the comment about paul pretending to be drunk, that's just horseshit...."i heard from someone he's drinkin icetea form whiske bottles..."...this is straight outta the whole "karl rove" school baseless inuendo, and then just shruggin your shoulders and saying, well, i heard it somewhere??!?!?!?"...the dude needs to get a life....and can one of these guy's do their research...paul has said in numerous interviews he had not had a drink on some 13 year and has begun to have some drinks again, he even mentioned telling his father this before he died.....they act like there isnt any information about paul out there....i mean paul's a bit of an inigma, but he's done plenty of interviews of late to give these two numnuts enough info to base their conversation on ....but let's just ramble on.....to think of it, smithers, where's my bloody mary? ?, smithers????aarghhh@#$%^&*(

Maybe he hid a package of ketchup behind his ear during the guitar* smashing in SF, too.
*stunt guitar, of course.

Derogatis: "I've heard he's swigging iced tea out of the whiskey bottle." ?!? And thus Derogatis completes his short journey from hack music critic to gossipy high school Mean Girl.

Oh, that's it -
DeRogatis is mine.
Sure, I've used the Chicago show as a basis for some discussion. And my feelings about it were mixed. But I respect what other people say they saw.
AReg - your theory about the Bangs/Reed "friendship" is a good one. I think DeRogatis is definitely on the lookout for someone to antagonize - since he's not going to DIE like Bangs did.

Derogatis: "I've heard he's swigging iced tea out of the whiskey bottle." I think he was talking about Michael Anthony of Van Halen when he made that comment, but he floated it in an attempt to support his claim that Westerberg was "faking" the entire show, from the TV incident down to even being drunk... very strange.. Man, this guy (Derogatis) is an idiot! How many times can you say "hackery" on one show? This validates my response to the chick who asked me if we were journalists because I figured we must have sounded like assholes.

Derogatis: "I've heard he's swigging iced tea out of the whiskey bottle." ?!? If the Paul Westerberg I know wanted to drink tea on stage, he would probably pull an easy chair out on stage, a ratty old one with the stuffing coming out of it, plop himself down with a steaming cup, tea bag string hanging over the side, and announce, "It's tea time, f**kers!" The man ain't in to fakin' it for nobody.

What a complete ass! How dare Paul not be the same as he was in 85. You can't freeze in place, the Stones are grandfathers and are hardly a danger to the youth of America anymore, should we stone them too, because Voodoo Lounge wasn't Exile. Billy Joel still pumps out the same schlock today as he did 30 years ago. Derogatis must masturbate to his music when he goes to bed at night.
