I'm going to be way in the minority on this, but I thought the show was mediocre at best and near-terrible at worst. He didn't sound good from the very start (vocally nor on guitar), and I thought the only exceptional part was the stretch of "Valentine," "Psychopharmacology," "High Time," and "Making Me Go". The version of "Substitute" was pretty cool, though, I have to admit.
Maybe it was our vantage point, maybe it's because I wasn't drinking (though it seemed Paul had been), but it was the only bad show of his I've ever seen, and this was my 12th Mats/Paul with band/Paul solo show.
I'm really glad all of you had a great time, but I feel like I saw a completely different show. I'm amazed that anyone could say it was the best they've ever seen him or that anyone would want a tape of it. I'll bet it sounds like poop the second go-round.
Anyway, I didn't want to try to step on anyone's buzz, but I just wanted to express my opinion on this (again, the only time I've ever been disappointed with a Paul-related show).

MJH - You need to attend another show. He doesn't usually misbehave like that. In Chicago, it felt like 1985 again. The band was completely tight for the first half, then just went their own way. It was great fun in true Mat's spirit. It wouldn't be a good beginner show for anyone, and I had a few of those with me. I had to explain the chaos. Just the same they had a fabulous time. Jodi - U r a dear sweet girl. Wish I coulda joined your Hootenanny, but I was a spent old lady with a plane to catch. What a night for a night... Hope to see you all again, and maybe spend more time... Louisville - Fantastic. Like my one word review?

Kevin Bowe needed to talk to the sound guy, he was getting no love through the PA.

Kevin Bowe needed to talk to the sound guy, he was getting no love through the PA. I agree. This would be my only complaint of the night. And up front we were rocking pretty good except for a few statues. I had to go up there because if Paul is only doing a band thing every ten years, I need to do my white man shake up front. Also, what's up with the chic giving Paul a complete scalp massage while he was playing in the crowd? Pretty creepy.

for those of you thinking the chicago show was a bit off...trainwreck...uncomfortable...not on...or whatver you might think...
you def werent at 3 night pantages in minneapolis! THAT show was all those things and more....
chicago was incredible compared to...although iw ill say third night pantages was fuciing incredible, pissy mood, fucked up atmosphere, smashed guitars, start of songs..end of songs craziness...
chicago was great. the band was on fire if you ask me, Paul was more in a party mood it seemed like, unlike minneapolis 3rd nigth where he was just pissed off for whatever reason. Being longtime mats fans...arent these shows kind of expected???
the band is much more comfortable, i dont look at them as pauls backing band...i se this as one unit, paul leading the way, but the band is up front rocking. They keep it together and michael bland is an absolute MACHINE behind the kit. brings those songs to life, hits the drums harder than many ive seen...just incredible.
and pauls voice sounded great, A HUGE DIFFERENCE over all from the november shows in mpls.
awesome.

I agree with HillBillyJunk, after Sunday Pantages if a show falls apart for a while I'm just happy if it's in a fun way as opposed to a really, really weird and uncomfortable way. And I thought he came back pretty strong during the encore, as well. But no worries mjh, all opinions welcome.

Many parts of the Chicago show were real fine, but with that last draw off the whiskey bottle I feel it turned south. Not sure if his drinking again is going to pan out as a real great move (I will mention Steve Earle as a good example of cleaning up your act and as a result putting on great shows with intelligent commentary).
We finally just left the show, missing two encore songs I guess, as I was frankly a little disturbed that he was basically non-functional at that point. This ain't the eighties, Paul--and I'm speaking as someone who finally figured out I'm real lousy at drinking and should just quit practicing (right about the time he did). I guess the disturbing part is it appears you really can't go back to it with very positive results.
No offense here toward anyone and their choices--just I got sober along about the time I heard he had quit and it hit home a little. Hope no one is offended--he's still my guy...
So anyways, I'm doing the only logical thing under these circumstances: Going to Detroit to see him again!

When he was smashing the TV he made some reference to Tori Hunter I think. I'm guessing it was something with the collision at home plate last year with the Sox. Did anyone else catch this?
I had a great time at the show and as a newbie, I hope to be spending more time on this cool site.

Not sure if his drinking again is going to pan out as a real great move In retrospect it probably would have worked fine if he did- say one or 2 shots. But that was a pint bottle (of Jamisons?) with at least an inch left and he just chugged it. A part of me was like - yeah, let's go! Probably the beer in me. Anyway, I had a great time. That's all that counts. Wish I could follow this tour.

I hear ya, that's why I waited till later to shower. What do you expect from a hotel with gangs and hookers hanging out in the parking lot? And don't forget the pink toilets. Pure 70's class in the Chicago Lodge. ok and a little back to the topic at hand. Yes the show was a bit of a trainwreck but I in no ways thought it sucked or would refer to it as bad. No not the best show I've seen by him but the set list was so great. I got Stain Yer Blood, Gunshy and 23 Years Ago in one night. I was so so happy. And I'll never be able to stand how great As Far As I Know, Making Me Go and Knocking on Mine sound with the Ebony Rhythm Buddah on the drums. These songs sound so amazing. While Milwaukee was a bit more up tempo, Chicago still had its moments of greatness, PW style. And hell tell me another night I'll have one of my favorite musicians fall into my arms, literally. Thats the beauty of these shows, been to 7 this year and not one of them could even consider calling the same or real similar to the other nights. I too want to quit my job and become a westerhead (like I haven't gotten close enough to it already). I really wish I could make an east coast show, I love that part of the country. Hmmm philadelphia's on a weekend right?
