And then there are the little things, like responding to a request for “Treatment Bound” by incorporating the word “treatment” several times into “Love Untold”. Not many songwriter/performers would dare perform that kind of impromptu surgery (or self-mutilation) of their songs. When I heard Paul mention "Treatment Bound," I got very excited at the thought of them pulling that one out of their collective asses. If I had one minor criticism of the show, it was that all the Mats material Paul and the band performed came from their Sire releases -- and those were pretty much the "hits" from those records -- with nothing from the Twin Tone days. Paul's got so large catalogue of songs to draw on, it's too bad he couldn't pull out some of the lesser-known songs like "Treatment Bound," "Color Me Impressed" or (we can dream, can't we?) "Nowhere Is My Home." How cool would it be to hear "Go" again live? Any one of those would've been the cherry on top of the sundae. It's kinda like going to see Cheap Trick these days. If they never played "I Want You To Want Me" again, I wouldn't lose any sleep, but I know inevitably they're going to trot that one out whenever I see them. But then they pull out something obscure like "The House Is Rockin' (With Domestic Problems)", and it's worth the price of admission. Something to consider for future shows from an old-school fan of 20+ years.... I won't go on about his band (other posts have that covered), but they were solid and clearly having a good time. It was a great show and I hope I won't have to wait seven more years to see Paul and his Only Friends rock LA again. P.S. I liked the gloves clipped to Paul's jacket sleeves he was wearing at the beginning of the show.

So he didn't play I Will Dare? Nope - and they didn't play Can't Hardly Wait, either. If one of those was on the list for the encore, they probably got bumped for Honky Tonk Angel. FYI, Mike's list is indeed fairly comprehensive, but not in "order" - and it would be beyond me to attempt to fix the puzzle.

Come on March 3rd...you all have me antsy in my pantsy for this show. I dig that he is pulling out some All Shook Down material. I figure by the time he gets to Denver, they should be very polished...and hopefully a lot playful. I am counting down the days.

Yep, he stopped Crackle and Drag after one verse, screaming F*CK, F*CK, and made some comments about songs about death. ... He said something about Crackle and Drag being like a wake.

He forgot "I'll Be You".....
Don't think he as anything against his early recordings.... if I remember correctly, he played "Color Me Impressed" and "Hanging Dowtown" at the '96 Trubador show....

I have a longer post in "LA Night 2", so I'll just quote some of the between-song chatter that made this one a classic:
"Tuning's a crutch for the weak."
"Ebony ... Rhythm ... Buddha!"
"ERB ... ERB ... ERB"
"Fuck, Fuck, Fuck it, Fuck!"
"Here's a cool song about death ... "
The setlist:
Merry Go Round Someone Take the Wheel Live Forever Makin' Me Go Let the Bad Times Roll As Far As I Know I Got a Mind to Give Up Living -> Kiss Me On the Bus Blues Kiss Me On the Bus AAA Mr. Rabbit Knockin' on Mine Valentine Little Mascara Born for Me High Time Star Star Crackle & Drag (aborted) Only a Hobo How Can You Like Him? What a Day (for a Night) Love Untold I Think I Love You Folk Star I'll Be You Psychopharmacology I.O.U. **** Wild Side of Life Alex Chilton -> Left of the Dial
Fuck a star, MR
