Paul was clearly not bothered about promoting Folker last night - I think the only one he played was My Dad. The second half was a lot better than the first - even though he looked shockingly like Rod Stewart throughout. He briefly reminisced about playing to '13 people in a bingo hall in Sheffield' on a previous visit to the UK. This brought a few bingo caller heckles. 'Two fat ladies - 88', 'Unlucky for some - 13'. The ballads were the best - they always have been. It was great to see him back.

Paul was OUTSTANDING on Tuesday night at the Scala. Old classics aplenty and, yes, I doubt that many of the audience even possess a copy of Folker. Judging by the age of most of us, we were probably thinking about school uniforms and mortgage repayments than merchandise!!!!!
Extra special thanks to the security guys and their dignified and relaxed response to the impropmtu stage invasion. One looked visibly flustered by his expression on a picture I took of the crowd.
And special thanks to Paul himself for not being bothered when I hugged him rather drunkenly as he made his way offstage.

I went with five friends who knew little or nothing about Paul. The consensus was that there were moments of genius but plenty of mediocrity. One of them felt the years without major success had taken its toll. But everyone agreed that Paul's verve and humour were endearing. Sadly, I don't think any of my friends will be rushing out to buy his music. Phil - did you go with any non-fans?

Christian, you took five non-fans to a sold out gig by someone who has not visited England for 11 years? ??!!!!!!!!!!! Only joking, but I met an old friend there who is also a fanatical Replacements fan and, I admit, Paul could have played covers by The Strokes and The Libertines all night long and we would still have loved it! Is that shallow? Maybe the years without major success meant that we loved Paul even more.........

Phil - I thought my friends might be seduced by Paul's magic and become fans for life. They weren't, but what do they know? Glad you enjoyed it. I hope we don't have to wait another 11 years.
