First Glimmer What A Day For A Night Lookin' Up In Heaven Achin' To Be Kentucky Rain Swingin' Party I Will Dare then to open up the Golden Smog set: Dead Flowers (Rolling Stones) Paul was in great spirits, not too chatty, but seemed to really be enjoying himself.

The second Bob/Grant song was Hardly Getting Over It. They actually sounded really good together, especially with Grant playing rythhm while Bob solo'd on the second song.
Paul sounded almost shockingly good. I knew his voice was good but his time was absolutely awesome. He sounds fantastic.

didnt get in the door until 'Swingin Party'...it's kinda cool to walk into a bar and there is Paul Westerberg singing 'Swingin Party'. I Will Dare follows...cool as always.
Lots of new stuff from Soul Asylum..plus Black Gold, Somebody To Shove, and Closer To The Stars.
Looks like Bob Mould got himself a Bowflex..played a couple new ones plus If I Can't Change Your Mind. Your Favorite Thing...Then Grant Hart gets up for a 2 song Husker Reunion. I can listen to Bob all day.
Members of Golden Smog step up...plus Paul! They rip through Dead Flowers..then Paul is outta there. A lot of Kraig Johnson follows, good stuff, but I'm not so familiar with it. Couple of Dan Murphy tunes..Ill Fated.
Gear Daddies get up and rip through their more well-known stuff...always good to hear Martin's Strength and Billy's Time Heals. Forgot how much I like them.
Then time to clear out for the dance party. Wolfdog (with Mrs. Wolfdog in tow) makes his exit quickly...arms raised in a V. I really don't know why...seemed to be the thing to do at the time.
The crowd seemed rather subdued. Especially on the 2nd floor where it seemed to be mostly social drinkin going on...oh well...Wolfdog had a blast and is ready to rev it up for the Painkillers.

i got to talk to grant hart, which made me want to pee my pants. i just was standing there and there he was.
"i'm glad you played 'never talking to you again'," i said. "yeah, it was cool," he said.
then i passed out.
just kidding then he moved on to wherever it was he was going. also, sister #2 (who was with me) nearly passed out when dave pirner bumped into her.
it was a good time. i missed most of paul (stupid class), but i did get there in time to hear 'I Will Dare.' so i was ecstatic.

i got to meet Grant Hart a few years ago (well, 9) when he played the garage in London and he was great. Stopped for a photo and everything, real cool guy. Sadly missed out on Bob playing.
Are Soul Asylum still going? I mean, album and touring wise? They've obviously had to take time out with Karl being ill but i'd love to see them again. Last time I saw em was 95 in shepherds bush. And they haven't played here since to my knowledge, Dave didnt even come over on his solo tour. Soul Asylum started me off on my whole love of Minneapolis bands and my discovery of great music, having seen em support GnR, until then my favourite band! Who'd have thought id be seeing them almost a decade later, purely being there to see the bass player! Haha! Anyway, have big soft spot for Soul Asylum so great to hear Karls doing good and hope all you lucky Minneapolitans had a great nite! See you in a fortnight...

i didn't see any mwt-ers or 40 watters, and i looked, but it is hard when you don't really know what most people look like, and you only know them by names like "monkey"... anyway, my friends & i didn't move from the back right corner railing area all night, so if you walked by & saw someone in a black hooded sweatshirt, and baby blue chuck taylors with a guy who looks like my brother (but isn't), and his short, dark haired wife, that was me!
paul's short set was cool. he held up a tiny scrap of paper, and said, "this is my setlist. i couldn't find a postage stamp." i was real happy to hear achin' to be. he made the obligatory tommy comment at the end of swinging party. good stuff. all told, his set just made me excited for the pantages shows.
soul asylum. soul asylum. i was looking forward to their show, and i was only mildly disappointed. they oughta ditch the keys player. he honestly doesn't add anything, and in fact takes away from the sound of a tight rock unit. anyway, i vowed never to see them live after the midway park show some years ago, but i'm glad i did see them last night. karl's comments at the end were really, really cool.
"even if i didn't know me, i'd still be at this show."
here's the funny part. i had COMPLETELY forgotten bob mould was on the bill. well, that buff motherf*cker walked onstage, plugged in his blue strat, and just instantly pinned you to the back wall. no acoustic, no bullshit. it was a chartered trip through sugar, husker du, and solo bob straight through to a celebrated summer. he always has been a rather intense performer, but last night, f*ck! the guy's voice sounds like a howitzer. i just about shit myself when grant came out.
"see, if bob & i can play together, we can get bush out of office..."
golden smog was excellent; although i would have liked to see some other alumni onstage for at least a song or two. oh well. when paul barked out dead roses, i knew we were in for a treat. too bad he only hung around for that one song, but it was a very, very good song. they played some kinks, do anything you wanna do with the aforementioned steve wynn (??) smoked, etc., etc. does anyone know what was that last song they played?
oh, and i left during the first gear daddies song. ugh.
p.s. who was the golden smog drummer? she was awesome. also, i [heart] jesse greene.

Great night, the definite highlight was Paul & Golden Smog playing "Dead Flowers," with Grant Hart & Bob Mould a close second.
I liked Paul's solo set, "I Will Dare" was particularly great. Definitely ready to see/hear him with a band again.
I actually found myself liking a lot of Soul Asylum's new songs, which I haven't been able to say in a while. Dave's comments re: Karl and Karl's comments at the end of the set were pretty cool.
Mould was obviously great, good to see Hart up there with him.
The Smog was fun, although it would have been cool to see Gary Louris up there (and Tweedy as well, isn't Wilco in town?). I've already mentioned the awesomeness of "Dead Flowers," plus the song with Steve Wynn and whatever the last song was just rocked.
Gear Daddies finished things off nicely, although Martin continues to attract a disturbingly frattish crowd. "Color of Her Eyes" & "Time Heals" rocked, only low point was "Strength" which is just an endless dirge (sorry Wolfdog).
Great night overall, I've kinda felt burned out about live music lately and this really reminded me of what it should be all about. Plus hopefully it helped out Karl.
Bring on Pantages!

Plus hopefully it helped out Karl. the Star Trombone is reporting that ticket sales raised $50,000 plus whatever proceeds comes from the t-shirt sales and silent auction. not too shabby.

though i did stare obviously and probably quite rudely at all the tall men wondering if they were Wolfdog. Me and the Mrs. were bouncing around the place all night...she's not one to stand still for long. Behind the soundboard for Paul and half of SA upstairs looking straight down on Bob Mould's head sitting on the comfy couches upstairs for part of Golden Smog back down to front row in front of the PA for about 15 secs for Gear Daddies ( Im still ringing) then back by the bar of the left side for the rest of the Gear Daddies then a quick exit before what looked like an Asian dance party was about to begin. I didnt notice anyone staring...rudely or otherwise. Except for the occasional little drunk guy saying "You're the tallest guy I ever seen" thanks. I need the validation.

there it is. that's the reason i left last night during their set, and that is the reason i have never stayed through any of their shows. yeah, i think that's a valid complaint, the frat rock. but for some of us who went to college in the early 90s the gear daddies just so encapsulate those years and what it's like to see him walk into the bar with another girl and the only thing you can do is put boys will be boys on the jukebox and sing along. it was even more perfect for some of us, because the him who made us sing that song so damn often was actually there last night and we got to hug him again for old time's sake.
