Okay. What I can remember of the set. Not in order as this is from short term memory and I might have missed something. Waiting for somebody Final hurrah My Dad (he yelled a line about Johnny after the 'piture of his only Grandson' line but didn't make it out) Another Girl Bad Times Roll Valentine Little Masscara Born For Me If Only You Were Lonely Crackle and Drag High Time Sadly Beautiful Lush and Green First Glimmer Mr Rabbit Left of the Dial Knockin on Mine (an english teacher from.....Shefield!) Alex Chilton I Will Dare Swingin Party ('this is The Eagles') Left of Dial Love Untold Skyway Here Comes A Regular Encore: Can't Hardly Wait Plus a quickly aborted stab at Customer and something I didn't quite catch (was it Nowhere is my home - I couldn't make it out). Absolutely blinding. Dressed in those bright red pants and a black shirt with a tie as scarf round his neck, he seemed in good spirits. The anticipation in the room was so thick before he came on and you could really feel the love London has for him and how much he's been missed all this time. When he came on he said something like 'thanks for waiting for me....it was a hell of a long bus ride!' Very much the 2002 set-up with the couch and invited stage invasion (which I couldn't join in on ). Only hearing one song from Folker was disappointing (I was longing for Gun Shy and Folk Star at least) but given its been so long you can understand him playing it a bit safe (as far as Paul does safe). Came out for the enore with a cigarette. Oh dear - there goes my quitting resolve for a while. I'm totally buzzing and the come down from this is gonna hurt now that its been and gone. Hope everyone enjoys the MPLS gigs as much as I - and everyone else there by the looks of things - enjoyed this. No t-shirts I'm afraid. Hopefully those less technologically challenged than me will have some photos.

All my email so far is positively glowing. I think I may be just a wee bit green with envy but after 11 years of waiting, these folks deserved an amazing show and sounds like they got it.

You know, it would be really, really, really nice to find a bittorrent of this on bt.easytree.org so that I'll have something to listen to on my drive to the benefit on Thursday.

This wasnt a show it was a religious experience!
Three of us managed to get into the VIP bar after the show (Kevin gets the prize for champion blagger!) and hung out with Paul for about 15 minutes. Talked about all sorts of stuff, I'll remember tomorrow.
Suicainekids setlist is complete I think, but this is the right order (not that I have a great memory, I just wrote them down in order) -
Waiting for Somebody Final Hurrah My Dad Another Girl Another Planet Let The Bad Times Roll Valentine Born For Me High Time If Only You Were Lonely Crackle and Drag (acoustic) Lush And Green Sadly Beautiful First Glimmer I Will Dare I Will Dare (900mph version) Knockin On Mine Alex Chilton Mr Rabbit Left Of The Dial Swinging Party Love Untold Skyway (stage invasion I made it on stage behind the sofa!) Here Comes A Regular Cant Hardly Wait (fantastic) Snippet of Customer , then short attempt at something else in the style of Long Black Veil but that wasnt it, and I forgot to ask him what it was.
I have photos (stage and VIP lounge, and a signed copy of Mono!) will sort tomorrow (its 2.30 am now), others in the gang have better photos than me too, so should get those in the next day or two.

Oh Boy! ;D Nothing else needs to be said.
Spent the evening with some fans from the US, who flew over from San Fran especially for the show. Good people - Brian, Jeff, and Jenny.
Just as a footnote, some of you may remember JillRocks posting on here a few months ago. Well she & I were to be married in late September, but she died suddenly on September 21st. She was due to be at the show with me tonight - she'd have absolutely LOVED this.

Well its the morning after the night before. But man what a night. I feel like i am still walking somewhere in the clouds, and dont want to come down. All I can say is that you people on the other side of the pond are in for one hell of a treat. Believe me I am not overhyping it by saying that, Paul westerberg was awesome last night. he was tight, didnt fluff chords or forget lines, (although he perhaps neednt have bothered singing at all, he had the audience to do that). To top the whole magical experience off, Three of us managed to blagg ourselves to the VIP party afterwards. Spent about 15 mins with Paul, shooting the breeze, He was very aproachable and friendly and very willing to talk,(some of it quite personal considering he was talking to complete strangers). He is smoking again (he started after the death of his father) I even had the courage to ask him about Tommy,(which i was aprehensive about, but it must have been the few beers) and he was surprisingly candid, and refutes Tommys claim that they havnt spoken in 7 years, He said he was like a brother to him, but generally doesnt care too much for Tommys GnR experience or Axl Rose, Or the LA Rock star direction. He was scathing about ryan adams, when i asked him who is "How can you like him" about. He is a F*****g P**ck and should get a sense of Humour was the response. I am sure we talked about other things but its difficult to concentrate when you meet someone you worship. So after a few photos and Cd signings we were off up to the clouds, and still havnt come down.

Damn, Kevin, you are killing me....over here....
Jesus, and to think that you offered me that extra ticket!
AAARRRRGGGGH!
Did you take your wife?
Anyway, I asked Tommy about Paul last month and he claimed he hadn't "seen" Paul in seven years, but said that they still "spoke" from time to time.
Glad to hear you had a good time at the show, I guess I'll be looking out forever for the next Paul gig... in Europe anyway.

Dave, what can i say. I am still on a high. to say that it was immense is an understatement. No, I didnt take my wife in the end, I sold the ticket to another worthy recipient. By the sounds of it , you might not have to wait too long for a Westerberg European trip, he told me last night, he is planning to get over again early in the new year (withn a Band). So fingers crossed.
Cheers kevin

So this is my review of sorts, such a great night! Patrick Considering its eleven years since Paul Westerberg last played this country you might be forgiven for thinking what audience he had may have dwindled, you also might think the enthusiasm and familiarity with the material may be dimmed compared to that of an American audience, after all who knows the Replacements over here right? And then you might think that this crowd showed up out of casual curiosity. If you thought any of these things you would be completely utterly totally very very wrong. Even before the show, the lines were around the block, and this was people who already had tickets, just wanting to get in and get a good spot. Once in the venue the level of anticipation was stratospheric. The stage, as on the Come Feel Me Temble tour, had a sofa at the rear with a few guitars leaning against it. When Paul hit the stage at around 8.45, thumping into 'Waiting for Somebody', the tone for the evening was set, frequently the Westerberg vocal was drowned out by the word perfect crowd, hands clapped time above heads, fists punched the air. I saw two Westerberg shows on the 2002 'Come Feel Me Tremble' American tour, and saw similar enthusiasm there, so I thought its an American thing, a Brit audience is more subdued, but its not an American thing it's a Westerberg thing, nobody was subdued here. Despite Paul's assertion that there was no set list on a radio interview earlier in the day, there did seem to be something of a plan, at least as he rattled through the first few numbers. This portion of the set included the night's only song from Folker, 'My Dad', complete with a compulsory fluff of lyrics, and a mention for his son Johnny, at the line 'His only grandson' Paul said 'He was crying when I left, and he'll be crying when I get home'. This was followed by 'Another Girl Another Planet' which gave an indication that Paul was willing to play pretty much anything from his or the Mats back catalogue, as long as he could remember how to! After a vibrant 'Little Mascara', the mood was slowed for the touching 'Born For Me', as the audience finished singing that one, Paul said 'Then I didn’t write a song for three years, until this' and hit 'High Time' from Mono. It was about now that the plan ran out, and songs that were shouted for got played, 'If Only You Were Lonely' was probably the strongest singalong yet, the following 'Crackle and Drag' sounded a little thin in comparison. 'Lush And Green' proved too much for one audience member (scarf boy Alex!) who at the close of the song clambered on stage to grab Paul for an emotional hug, it was taken as it was intended and the guy left the stage delighted at having managed to express what everyone else seemed to be feeling. The finest sequence of the night was a triple whammy of, 'I Will Dare' 'Knockin' On Mine' and 'Alex Chilton'. 'Knockin on Mine' was complete with lyric change, 'The English teacher from Vancouver' switched location to Sheffield, Paul explained the Mats once played a bingo hall in Sheffield to 9 people and a dog. 'Swingin' Party' rivalled 'If Only You Were Lonely' for audience volume. After 'Love Untold' to the confusion and irritation of the security staff, Paul invited the audience on stage, and sang Skyway and Here Comes A Regular surrounded by happy smiling faces. He clambered through the gathered bodies to briefly leave the stage, then returned for an encore of an electric 'Cant Hardly Wait', the ecstatic crowd singing like it was some kind of team chant. Paul had a stab at another request, 'Customer' and toyed with a couple of blues songs, before deciding that was it. I said to him after the show if he didn't know whether or not he had a UK audience, well he does now! ===== Think you're the only Replacements fan in the UK/Ireland? You're wrong! Come and join the other three of us on the beerforbreakfast yahoo group (colonials also welcome). Discussion and news on the Mats/Paul/Tommy plus any band that even looks like they've considered covering 'Cant Hardly Wait'. Beer for breakfast - Lots of stuff, and its all pretty good. groups.yahoo.com/group/beerforbreakfast

Kevin,
What an experience you had talking with PW. I think this is why he has such a devoted fan base, because most of us know that PW won't brush someone off or be plastic when a fan talks to him. What you see is what you get and that type of integrity and honesty is very rare in the entertainment business, or for most circumstances these days. Maybe Kerry or Bush could learn a thing or two from Westy!
I've only seen PW once and that was during the Eventually tour in '96. Unfortunately, I have not been living anywhere near his tour stops since then. I now live in California, so I'm hoping he'll make a stop in San Francisco or thereabouts soon!
You would think that he would do more than 1 show after travelling so far. Keep your eyes out for any surprise shows in the London area tonight!!
Thanks for sharing your recent experience.

24 hours later I still can hardly believe how fantastic this show was. Often when I see a show, even by one of my musical heroes,Im slightly disappointed. I build myself up for it so much that it can hardly reach my expectations. Not this time.It was everything I could have possibly hoped for and more. I never imagined Id be on stage just 6 feet away from Paul as he sang 3 songs that mean the world to me - I was among those that went up on stage near the end. Id say he played a good 7 of the 10 mats songs I most wanted to hear - I was especially pleased to hear 'Swingin Party' and 'Sadly Beautiful'. Ive seen a lot of shows....but I think this one may be the greatest yet. I hope its not too long til the next one. But even if I never get to see Paul again Ill treasure the memory of this night forever.

Brilliant show....well worth the journey from Sunny Glasgow! Everything about the setlist + performance etc has been said already, so suffice to say the guy is still the best on the block as far as i'm concerned........anyone else would surely have been a letdown after a ?10 year wait in anticipation. If anyone's let down by any one of his shows right now, they're being pedantic "unprofessional? perhaps. Real? Unquestionally." (or wahatever he said) Please tell me somebody recorded this. i have some short video clips from the show which seem pretty good quality..i'm working on uploading them somewhere just now, i'll keep you updated cheers, peter

DirtyWindow. You may not have long to wait. The West Coast is definatly on his agenda. During our VIP Party experience, Our cosy chat was interupted by a couple who had flown over to london from San fransisco, and they asked him about the West Coast. Its definatly going to happen, the couple even tried to get him tied down to a specific venue in SF (ie. Fillmore etc) which left Paul a little confused, BUT is is going to happen sooner rather than later. No such Luck with the extra London show, Wasnt practical, as he had to be back in MPLS for the Karl show.

"...I was from Canada..." but I'm now living in Dublin. I say this, because I flew over to London for the Scala show, and there I met a kid from PA, a couple from Germany, a guy from Rotterdam - and they were the people in my immediate viccinity on the floor. The message board seems to reflect that there were other people who went to great lengths to be there. I think this confirms that we qualify for cult status - and as cults go, I can't think of a better one on the planet. At 46, I shouldn't be talking like this, but if the show proved anything at all, it's that if you get a bunch of people in a room with Paul on stage, you get the equivalent of 750 good friends, a few drinks, an old-fashioned hootenanny and the start of one long-lived memory. And then there was the music: Sloppy, poingnant, irreverent, pointed, jagged and comforting.
Paul! For god's sake, come back to us soon!! Slainte!!!

What a magical night! I still can't believe i've seen Paul live, something i thought i'd never do. Got into the Mats 10 years ago, the year after Paul last played here at the Borderline and well, i thought my chance had passed. And in a months time i will have seen him a total of TEXT as im flying from London to Minneapolis on 4th November and going to all 3 nights at the Pantages Theatre. 27 year olds are not supposed to be that irresponsible surely? Can't hardly wait!

Hey, Hootenanny58. I met you man, in the line waiting to go in, We chatted briefly, and i caught you inside during the gig, when both overcome with emotion (During My dad I think) we shook hands. I think it was you anyway, as there cant be too many people from Canada living in Dublin, that was there.
