Here is another review I acquired from someone who was there….
Paul played an energetic, thirty-five minute solo set in louisville saturday night...
he seemed to be in good spirits...
the guy that introduced him worked for the radio station, and said that when they started putting the show together, Paul was the first person he called...
then, he said - "here he is, your hero and mine, Paul Westerberg..."
set list
12 string acoustic:
1. It's a Wonderful Lie
2. What a Day For a Night - he said that he wrote this song for Bonnie Raitt, but she didn't want it...
3. Crackle and Drag
4. I Will Dare - during the fast picking part in the middle of the song, he leaned into the mic and said - "this is when I miss Bob the most", in reference to playing the difficult guitar part....
5. Kentucky Rain - cool version, especially since it rained all weekend...
6. If Only You Were Lonely/ Sweet Virginia - he played sweet virginia again at the after party, and said that whenever he played If only you were lonely, it always made him think it sounded like another tune, and it had just dawned on him that it was this Stones tune...
funny - he changed the lyrics in IOYWL, to "3 push-ups this morning, that was half of my goal...", and then said something about "you should have seen me last nite..."
at this point in the show, he said "shall we rock?", and strapped on a Gibson ES335 electric guitar thru a Marshall half stack...
7. Valentine
8. Mr Rabbit
I don't think he was happy with the tuning or sound of the 335 at that point, so he went back to the 12 string acoustic and played:
9. Can't Hardly Wait
then, back to the electric, to close with...
10. Alex Chilton - here he takes an obvious swipe at el goodo by changing the lyric to "I never travel far, without a rented guitar..."
he really rocked this song out, and when it was over, smashed that beautiful guitar over his amp and walked off the stage....
afterwards, SwinginP gave him a hard time about smashing it, and he kinda laughed it off, and said that he guessed he did it because Sonic Youth was coming on next....
speaking of,
Paul along with Darren Hill and three other members of his party, did indeed crash the after-show hootenany we were having in an empty lounge room on the 12th floor of The Brown Hotel at about 1am, staying for close to an hour I guess, and played about four songs:
1. blues in "A" - Gtrplyr and Swinginp on guitars, and Paul playing harmonica...
2. Born For Me - we met a cool couple from Chicago - who actually got engaged at the party... He was responsible for getting Paul to the party, calling his room, inviting him to come up, and sing this song for his newly acquired fiancee...
it was really really good, too...
3. first song off of Folker - I won't give it away...
he did say that he thought the album was really good, and that he had recorded it himself again in the basement, and then went into a few of his recording techniques, which was cool for a geek like me...
4. Sweet Viginia` - he played this Stones song again, with GtrPlyr accompanying, and pulling off a nice little solo when Paul said "pick it, boy..."
5. then after congratulating the newly engaged, he went into a little impromptu number with the lyrics saying something to the effect about relationships only being good for 2 or 3 years...
he sat on the couch in the middle of everyone and was very gracious...
he seemed at ease, answering everyone's questions, and posing for pictures...
he also said that Cameron Crowe was in Louisville filming a new movie for which Paul had contributed a new song for the soundtrack...
he seemed like a really cool guy...
