Well, Paul ended his part of the show about 10 minutes early, by smashing his guitar on an amp! Vintage! Anyone have any insight as to what was perturbing him? I know it must have been a little odd playing to a crowd that wasn't just there to see him (a little quieter than any Paul gig I've seen). I hope the guitar was rented, or depending on the cost....perhaps it's best it wasn't! It was good to meet a couple of you guys by chance. Hope everyone got home safely and had a good time. FREDDY

Overall a VERY good show. Paul sounded great, Sonic Youth played a lot of new stuff (apparently) and it sounded cool, John Cale (Velvet Underground) made a surprise 5-song set, Patti Smith was totally not what I expected (in a good way since I'm really unfamilliar with her work), and the Polyphonic Spree was an experience. I was up close on the side so I didn't notice it too much but my friend who got there late (flew in from out of town) said he couldn't hear very well in the back of the theatre so maybe that was part of Paul's apparent frustration. As he finished a rockin' version of "Alex Chilton" instead of "I never travelled far . . . without a little Big Star" he inserted the phrase "without a rented guitar" and smashed the f*cker on his amp. My memory sucks, but some songs he played: Valentine Can't Hardly Wait Alex Chilton If Only You Were Lonely Grrrr my memory sucks (Listened to too much live PW stuff this week and it's running together, and I'm sure someone else will have it for you). He did play a great version of "Kentucky Rain" which I'm sure those of you who came in town for both shows appreciated Hope everyone had a great trip, and I hope you all get home safe!! Edit: I had hoped to give it to him in person, but I wasn't sure how long he'd stick around after the way things ended, so I sent a Maker's Mark Secretariat cigar backstage via convention staff. They said he got it, so hopefully he did

Anyone have any insight as to what was perturbing him? the guy gunning to trade a video in the Trading section has some thoughts on that: not always real well a little shaky a little washed out over compensating surrounded by dark instead of focusing on the bright parts and the guy beside me singing at various times.

Hey Freddy get us a set list when you can?? This is not the exact order, I'm sure, but pretty close. Perhaps I left a song out, but I think this is it..... (started on acoustic) Wonderful Lie Crackle and Drag What A Day For A Night I Will Dare Ky Rain If Only You Were Lonely (switched to electric, asking if we were ready to rock) Valentine (threw in some Mr.Rabbit at the end) Can't Hardly Wait (back to acoustic) (back to electric)Alex Chilton (ended with a smash) As I said, perhaps I missed a song, or got one or two out of order, but that's my recollection. It was just enough to fuel my fire for wanting to see him again, for a full show. He seemed to be in a really good mood and had fun with his flubbed lyrics. I was proud to see (since I'm a Louisville basketball fan) that he had on red and black! I'm sure someone else can be a little more precise on the setlist, so I await correction! FREDDY

He also added Sweet Virginia in the middle of If Only You Were Lonely.
We were in the second row and after the set was over, my buddy said he could tell PW was frustrated, most likely by the lack of crowd interaction.
For what it's worth, I thought it was a great set.

Might be on to something Jim, though I thought he acted in a decent enough mood. If there was any lull in the music (like the pauses in Can't Hardly Wait) the place was in silence, for the most part. Perhaps the lack of familiarity from the audience's standpoint frustrated Paul. Didn't he piss and moan about opening for Tom Petty and it killed him because he was playing to people who didn't care about or know the Replacements? He got a thunderous ovation when he was introduced. I thought the crowed appreciated what he was doing, but it just wasn't alive.....if that makes any sense. But all this is speculation....maybe he was just finished...with the set and the guitar! ;D FREDDY

He gave a different explanation later regarding the guitar, and it wasn't anything to do with anger, at least after-the-fact. And yeah, the equipment wasn't his, but the bill will be.

The guitar smash was PEFECT! I didn't take it as him being pissed or anything, it was just a great way to end a great set. He actually broke off the neck and head of the guitar in one quick swipe to the top of his amp. Very impressive.
I did think the guitar was too low in the mix when he went electric. I was tempted to yell some thing out about it, but requested "God Damn Job" at the top of my lungs instead:)
While I missed 1/2 his set, it was well worth it hearing "If only you were Lonely" and the interesting bridge he threw into "Can't hardly wait". I rewatched the DVD last night/this morning, and he does the same thing. It really changes the song for me.
Drew2, It was cool meeting up with you and Mike after all these years. I wish we woulda had more time to talk. I meant to ask you what bands you're listyening to these days???
AReg, sounds like the hootenany happened after all, defeinitely want the scoop. Thanks for the tickets man, and great meeting you guys...Flo

one time, I broke a telephone in one quick swipe. smashed it, i tell you. it was a brand-new $500 work phone. it felt great and my co workers loved the show. to my delight, the girl next to me kicked two holes in the wall. all my boss said was that she could understand one hole, but two, she thought, was excessive.

That's why I only buy $10 phones. I guess I'm too thrifty with my destruction, or I just haven't felt the gratification of smashing someone else's shit.

i also broke a public phone when i was in detox, and well, let's just say i put in my 'phone time'...and, i still hate 'em. I threw my ex's phone out the window as i was driving on the freeway. it kept saying 'welcome to sprint' everytime it went in and out of service and i simply could not stand the fucked up combination of that and the traffic.
gee Monkey. never heard of Bi-Polar Bear. do you care to explain that remark?
(i didn't think so....)

Bipolar Bear, if I remember correctly, is a side project featuring Jennifer from Polara, "Office Riot" is a song of theirs from a Susstones compilation that came out last year. It would have been a cool song to have playing during the incident you're describing.
