'So what was a non You Am I year has already twisted and a further turn is the band stepping out as the bass, drums and guitar for equally legendary former lead singer of The Replacements, Paul Westerberg. It hasn't been confirmed but it is likely."
- Tim Rogers. Sydney Street Press April 28th.
Hope it happens, but then sorta hope it doesn't happen, cause I'd have to follow the tour.
(and this better not be some Australia only thing)

Hi Lizish! Thanks for the good news. I'll choose to believe it until proved otherwise. After all, six or seven PW fans can't be wrong! --Drool Marks aka TTBO
Feb 2nd, 2004, Post by Doug And when he comes to Australia, I'm sure You Am I would gladly back him up.
Feb 3rd, 2004, Post by mskelley I think whoever mentioned Australia's You Am I is dead-on right. They should open the show and then serve as Paul's backup band. The world's best rock band, no shit. They're due for a US trip as SpinArt released their record late last year and they haven't toured here to promote it. This bill would blow that Jet / Vines tour out of the water.
Feb 3rd, 2004, Post by adamapple i think you am i fomr australia, i talked to them when they played nyc last, adn they were thrilled with his new stuff/old stuff/all stuff....i remember tim rogers being introduced to paul when they were both at ocean way recording
Feb 4th, 2004, Post by flashg I voted for half and half and thus nominate the Figgs. ... As alternates (though it seems unlikely) You Am I who are Australia's best band and sadly not very popular in the USA.
Feb 4th, 2004, Post by wallyraffles He needs to get a band named "You Am I". They are an Australian band that deserves to come over here and get some exposure. They deserve more then what they get and have helped many other bands such as The Strokes, Jet, and The Vines get ahead. Check out youami.net and you will what I am talking about.
Feb 5th, 2004Post by torethatbridgeout The more I think about it, the more I think Paul is going to do the Chuck Berry, different-band-in-every-city, you-know-the-chords thing. ... Doubt he'll go overseas but if so .... Australia: You Am I, whose fans are familiar enough they wouldn't be begging for the band's material at Paul's shows

Not to mention, they'd be sure to drag out "White and Lazy" since You Am I did a killer cover of it on that Australian tribute CD --you can treat your ears to it at www.ar.com.au/~hac/replacements/reviews.htmNo Guthrie anniversary shows though, as You Am I will be supporting The Who those nights in Australia, their first tour there since 1968. Didn't Paul specifically mention Australia as one of the foreign lands he was unlikely ever to go to?

I saw a You Am I show on cable when I was in Melbourne and they were very good live. I have a CD of theirs somewhere, but haven't really given it a good listen. They are extreme mats fans. Sounds like a plan to me.

D'oh I thought I voted in that poll you've quoted but I guess I'd never registered here until yesterday. You see the good Roger's interview? www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/04/29/1083103601516.htmlGotta love somebody that punches up a <your country here> Idol Judge. I've got Spit Polish coming in soon. Cannot wait.

I did read that interview, trying to find the one that mentions Paul, but I gather that's not online. Or is there a way? I know you quoted the relevant part.
I tried out the rumor on one local expert, who said he thought PW might be looking for a less raucous band to back him for the Folker tour.
But I totally believe. This is it. Done deal. Pack your bags.

i think this is highly unlikely, as far as australia goes anyway. don't get me wrong, it would be great, but i really can't see paul coming to australia, when last time around, he didn't even go to the west coast.
the most recent mention paul made about touring down here was when eventually came out.
but to stop all the speculation, i'll see if i can ask tim rogers directly what the story is. i'll post as soon as or if i find something out.

I agree, in fact I recall PW saying he didn't see himself touring overseas much anymore and using Australia as an example of somewhere he'd probably never go. But I took this latest rumor to apply to his tour of America for Folker. Please tell Mr. Rogers there's at least one American fan who's been listening to his stuff non-stop since this rumor surfaced and loves it and really hopes he can come. In the meantime, You Am I/Mats trivia: the Australian band traveled all the way to Minnesota to record their first LP (Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls). And the Aussies had the Memphis Horns on their fourth long-play release as opposed to the Mats, who didn't get around to it till their fifth.

Isn't there some quote atributed to Paul that goes:
'The reason I'm so popular in Australia is that I've never toured there' ... or something to that effect.

Happy Louisville Day!!
Two questions: I'm in the dark. Any ideas when the Come Feel My Folker Tour will begin, and when is Folker the album due out?
Thanks all.

No idea when the album will be out, but I've heard rumors that the tour will take place in August & September.

I read older interviews that all say Folker's due out "early 2004" - maybe there wasn't enuf maraca on it the first tyme...

from today's MPLS paper (more on Soul Asylum/Karl Mueller if you click the link) www.startribune.com/stories/1371/4799297.htmlWesterberg's set was reportedly even looser than that. True to nature, Paul waited until most of the party guests had left before plugging in his live jukebox. The few witnesses on hand described the all-covers set (Stones, Kinks, Who, etc.) as laughably jumbled but brilliantly inspired. Yeah, like a Replacements show. "No matter what we played, it ended up sounding like him," marveled guitarist Randy Casey, whose hip cover band Retrofit with John Eller and Steve Price backed Paul. Westerberg broke his year-plus hiatus from the stage a weekend earlier with a solo set for a radio festival in Louisville, Ky. Rumors persist of tour plans for later this year, including one about Australia's You Am I being his backing band, which he denies . Clearly, though, Sunday's party won't be it for him this year.

nothing new here but from the sydney paper, May 27: It doesn't look like slowing down, either, with a You Am I support slot on the Who's Australian tour mid-year, a chance to play guitar with the MC5 at the same time, and a tentative offer for You Am I to be the backing band for another hero, former Replacements songwriter Paul Westerberg. www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/05/27/1085461879880.html

for a post-mortem on the dashed PW/You Am I tour, see this thread from a YAI board: www.youami.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=808expect a little Paul-bashing and teeth-gnashing--as it's told there, he put out feelers then didn't follow up
