Hi everybody, guitar player here. Any fellow six-stringers have any idea what kind of effects Paul uses on the rock version of "Crackle and Drag"? Could be a phaser, not sure. I don't really use many effects but I think that one just sounds cool as hell.

I don't hear any phase shifting going on in that song. It sounds like it's just plenty of overdrive. I'm wondering if he's using transistors or tubes in his amps.

Oh, I would most definitely think Paul's a tube man. He likes vintage equipment. I mean I don't know for sure, but it's an educated guess.
Well, it isn't phasing, no, but to my ears there issomething in the color of his tone outside of the usual guitar-amp-overdrive setup.

I'd guess it comes from tubes and lots of overdrive but some of it comes from awkward tunings he likes using.

It must be the pickups in his guitar that give his sound a sometimes harsh distortion tone. usually with tubes, it's a little smooth and warmer tone, don't you think? Think of the tone on "Pinebox"---that doesn't sound really warm like tubes to me. But like I said, it could be his pickups.

sounds like a cheapo ibanez tube screamer with the tone knob all the way left and some slight flange thru a Marshall JCM900.
